It's been some time since I was serious about this rifle and I'm still not sure if it's a good choice for a larger than .308 rifle. I already have a Sako TRG in .308 and I want something bigger than 308 but less than .50.

Out of these 3 calibers, which would be my better choice keeping exterior ballistics in mind for 1k yards. Do I want 338 lapua, 6.5 creedmoor or 260 Remington?

I would be really interested in hearing from someone that has or used one because of think that sticks in my mind was accuracy may not be what was expected.

338 lapua holds the record for longest sniper shot in Afghanistan
out of a 27 inch barrel , I was thinking of getting an accuracy international
but they go for seven grand its a lot of money to spend before you even have a scope .

I can't say which option is better (best), but I had a chance to shoot a Barret MRAD in .338 Lapua with a Thunderbeast Arms suppressor. My wallet was screaming in terror....

While that may be true of .338, I won't be able to use the range of a 338 just like I would never have the range to make practical use of a .50. Which was why I asked about the 260 R.E.M. And 6.5 creedmoor as well. Or would the 260/6.5 only be an incremental increase in range of the trg in .308. If the 2 don't offer a more than modest gain, may as well go 338 even though I will probably never have the range to make full use of it.

I have a SilencerCo Saker. It is rated for 300wm/rum. Wonder if it can handle the 6.5 and 260 rem pressure?

I've shot the MRAD in 338. The trigger is great and action is smooth, but you really need excess of 1k yards or have a lot of money to justify the cost.

If my dumbass can take a 308 out to 1100 and make head shots at 800 with a 223, a good shooter only needs a 308.

That said, I've gotten into the 6.5 game and like it. I just ordered another rifle for hunting use in addition to my precision rig.

This is America so buy what you want.

Since you don't have access to a range to get the most out out of the .338, .260 if you reload, or 6.5 if you're going to be purchasing factory ammunition.

An article by SHide basically says that inside of 1k you would be hard pressed to notice a difference. At longer ranges, the 100fps or so gain of the 260 may gain an advantage. Also the 6.5 is easy off the shelf ammo where as the 260 is a reloaders game due to the cost and make use of the longer brass for the velocity gain. I happen to be a reloaded of many calibers which include the .30br for bench rest. So, I guess the .260 is my game.

While I don't have the brands, have most of these calibers.

308 is an entirely practical rifle. Good at any range I am likely to shoot, good for any animal I am likely to hunt. Fairly accurate.
Creedmore, amazing tack driver. Arguably a great 1000-1200 yard rifle. If I want to hit it, it is my go to gun-but I hunt more with the 308
338 range toy more often than not. Heavier than the Creedmore, which is heavier than the 308...
50. Fun as hell to shoot. But while the 338 will make you broke shooting it, shooting match grade 50 will do it faster.

308 for practical, Creedmore for practice, 338 for ? (long rang elk hunting?), 50 for fun. Ar15 correct answer, get them all.

That rifle is nowhere near worth 6 grand. Sorry for Barrett; but they need to come back to planet Earth with that shit.

That's not even a $2000. gun.

Does Barrett give any accuracy guarantee on those sticks?

For the dough they're asking, they should have a 3/8 moa guarantee or better.

Well IBDAMN..As I said earlier, I have a trg 22 in 308. Haven't looked in awhile but the also chamber the trg in 260 remington. I guess that answers the question that didn't need asking...

while I completly 100% agree with you, your statement just tells me you haven't shopped guns much lately. crappy plastic bolt actions are getting to the 1K mark. something like that could easily fetch 2K day in and day out.

I've shot 308 out to 1k a bunch of times. Out to 1k I'd just stick with a 308.

since you already have experience with reloading and you are going to have to reload for best accuracy have you thought about going wildcat?
the 260ai is just a fire formed 260 rem case to get a 40* shoulder. with the ai you don't get nearly the case growth as with the 20* shoulder cases.

with the added case capacity I am getting a Berger 140 to 2910fps with h4350 and still getting 10+ firings per case

just an idea

It's a big jump from .338 to Creedmore/.260. Have you considered .300 Winchester magnum? All those cartridges will make your range but the Winmag will strike the target with considerably more energy. If you are just punching paper it won't matter but if you want to do some damage, it will.

Easily. 260rem and 6.5 are about as hard on a can as 308win is.

while technically true, if you read the account, it was more luck than "snipe". he fired multiple rounds before hitting the insurgent gunner at that distance. I am not completely convinced it was the round or the gun that did the job, but the stars aligning (iirc, the wind direction changed 3-4 times across the distance that the shot was made inducing multiple not so near misses before one shot finally landed).

You could have your rifle rebarreled to 260. Much cheaper than buying a whole new gun with the ability to have a nice high end barrel in whatever length and contour you want.

While that is true for the 40* shoulder, being as this would be my only 260, after the first firing all I would do is .001 bump and would accomplish the same thing for brass longevity. The brass killer is using the same brass in multiple chambers that require a full resize to ensure they chamber in any gun. Or, a really lousy chamber. For the trg and .30br the brass is saved for those rifles only and only require a .001 shoulder bump.

Just need me other thought, in addition to needing a much larger suppressor, is the 338 thermal safe? I would not worry about using my thermal on my 6.5, but 338 is a in more recoil than 308.
