Before you throw your meatloaf in the oven do you top it with ketchup or anything else like BBQ sauce?
I use ketchup. |
I spice it up a bit and add some other seasonings, but otherwise, yes.
Yes. And I usually have a little on the side when I eat it. Ketchup is good.
I wait till the last 20 minutes, brush on a mix of 7 Up, ketchup, cumin and smoked paprika.
Actually, in my adult life I've never made or had meatloaf.
Back when I was a kid, my mom put ketchup on it. |
Equal volumes ketchup and brown sugar. Add a little bit of vinegar for dissolving the sugar, and a tad of liquid smoke.

Uh no. Strips of bacon adorn the top of my loaves. I chop up most of the package of bacon to mix with the meat. Usually venison, so it needs the fat.

I've never actually made a meatloaf myself but I do like it occasionally say at a mom and pop diner with potatoes etc. My mom is an excellent cook and though I can't remember the last time she made one, when I was growing up she made them pretty often and she would put a light coat of ketchup on them and I remember hers as being very good. So to answer your question, yeah I like ketchup on meatloaf but it also isn't a requirement to me.

This stuff is good too with a little Sprite or 7Up mixed in. |

Momma never made it with ketchup growing up (and hers is still my favorite ) but I've experimented with a few different types of meatloaf and I do like putting ketchup on top when it goes into the oven.
Try Ina Garten's recipe. It's tasty. My mom's recipe is a "red" style meatloaf. She mixes some tomato sauce into the meat mixture (which is equal parts ground pork, beef and veal). She then tops it with a can of diced tomatoes then bakes. That is what I grew up with. I have no clue how popular that is or if anyone does it that way at all. I'm from Pittsburgh, Pa and that's how my grandma made it, too. |

Ketchp Mustard a little brown sugar and a dash of nutmeg. mixed
No, ketchup is too sweet. I make up a nice beefy brown sauce to go on it.

Mom used ketchup
I use BBQ sauce Using Heinz Chili Sauce is a good alternative to ketchup. I hated meatloaf growing up. I love it now. |

1/3 Dijon mustard, 1/3 vinegar, 1/3 brown sugar. Mix together and put in top. Much better than ketchup!
I grew up with it like that....not very good. Now I roast it, get a nice carmelized crust, serve with a good gravy and mashed potatoes......much better that way.......
like a steak, if you can make one worth a shit it doesn't need ketchup (on top or on the side)
But ketchup can certainly go a long way in carrying a semi-good meatloaf. Bad meatloaf needs ketchup on top and then some ketchup/picante on the side to dip it in |
Try the Alton Brown meatloaf.
My favorite so far; but I'm seeing some nice variations here. |

A-1, but not on top from the first, but generally on leftovers, especially if I make a cold meatloaf sandwich.
Leftover meatloaf sandwich with mayo... mmmmmmmmm.
Havent had one in years... given that I moved out of mom's house and no one makes meatloaf. |
You're not supposed to put anything on it until it comes out of the oven....
NO. I use Campbells's Tomato Soup Ketchup is for peasants ....
Eff no.
Brown gravy over it and mashed potatoes? Why yes 10/10. |
