Designs? Pre 69.

I do believe we are currently in the golden age of HP though.

Nothing today can hold a candle to a '59 Plymouth Fury or '57 Pontiac Bonneville in the looks department.

Form? Mid 50's to early 70's.
Function? right now.

I voted <1969. But for a daily driver I'll take new... but the 50's-60's had all the best rides, and they were made out of steel then

Every decade has a best car design.

Over a 10 year period I think the worst designs came from 1975-1985.

I can only narrow it down to two decades; the 60s and the 70s.

For style: The mid-60's to early-70's.

For performance, safety and build quality: Right now.

I would say as a child of the 60's that we have the best as far as design right now and the looks are right up there with the best from any decade .

Best looking cars are from the late 60s.  It's a fact, not opinion.

The performance of current cars is pretty astounding though.  There's been a huge jump in the past 10-15 years.

No doubt about that.  Today's cars are incredible.  I just hate all the plastic bumper covers, airbags, data busses, and all that bullshit.  The best car available today is a well done resto-modded 60s car with modern powertrain and upgraded brakes and suspension.

1990-1999. In general, they look good (not too boxy like too many '80s cars or bulky and inefficient like too many '70s cars), are safe, and have a minimum of electronics (unlike 2000s cars).

Although 70s and 80s cars have a few good stand outs the 50s and 60s all the way.
Mainly because I think automotive stylist had more freedom to design what was visually appealing, while also having the access to manufacturing techniques that allowed for a greater range of styles.

Designers weren't held back and restricted to fitting the car into safety and aero dynamic efficiency standards as they are today.

The late 60's had the biggest change in car design from previous generations, so it made the biggest impact on the public... Kind of like when a new band comes along that changes what type of music you listen to.... Elvis, Beatles, Nirvana etc...

Current models are the BEST car designs EVER! The problem is... car designs have been evolving since the 60's so we no longer experience that 'wow' factor that occurred when the cars from the 60's first rolled off the production lines.

If you compare a modern car design to a 60's car design, the modern car will win every day of the week.

1. Faster (A modern V-6 Camry will smoke most cars from the 60's)
2. Safer
3. Less noise
4. More HP
5. Better comfort
6. Better interior
7. More aerodynamic

I love the older cars and think they are great to look at... modern cars are better designed than previous years.

1972 and earlier for the most part after 72 things really went to hell. There were still good looking trucks but cars not so much and obviously performance went down the shitter.

I think a lot of the late '50s stuff was just too overdone, and that Fury is a good example.

By '59, Chevrolet was starting to clean things up a bit:

As far as '50s cars goes, I like the cleaner, smoother stuff of the earlier '50s over the maximum fins and chrome stuff seen in 57-59.

I'm a little biased, but I think the pinnacle of aesthetic design was the late 90s to early 2000s BMWs.

The E38, E39, and E46 bodies were the last ones before every carmaker started blending into one another.

How sweet would it be to go back in time and be able to walk around a dealership or used car lot around 1969-1970, hell even just driving around, everything you would see is now a classic!

I don't agree. There are a few standouts, but with the current designs, I'm getting tired of hexagonal grills, exaggerated angles, sharp edges, and aggressive proportions with high belt lines.

There are some messy designs out there. The 2014-2015 Silverado is the ugliest pickup Chevrolet has made in a long time, if not ever (the 2016 refresh helped a bit). The "Predator-faced" Lexus is a disaster. Acura still has the "beak." The front end of the Maxima is a train wreck. The new Civic is hideous. Ford is taking the Super Duty from bad to worse, and I'm really not looking forward to the 2018 F-150...

As another poster said, there are standouts from every decade. I think the 60s and early 70s had it down pretty well though. Great designs. Late 70s and 80s were pretty awfully bland except for exotics and the occasional sportscar. Some decent designs in the 90s but nothing amazing.

Probably 2011+ is where cars really have started looking cool again finally.

I voted for 1970-1979 because 1970 is my favorite year for muscle cars.

For me there's three era's of cars, first, just for the unadultered beauty, the 20's-30's custom coach work cars.....
Then the huge leap of the mid 60's-70's hotrods....
And today's vehicles for both great looks, performance and safety..

I have to agree.

A buddy has a dark blue one.

When you walk around it, the lines are as sexy as a hot woman's body.

But looking straight at the grill, it screams "outta my way, bitch."

1930s, especially the early '30s, were typically the classiest looking cars ever produced.  There have been plenty of good looking cars made over the years, certainly faster, sleeker, safer, etc., but none really rival that styling.

ETA- I'm not talking about hot rods and I'm especially not talking about rat rods.

If we are talking performance and drivability I love where we are right now.

If we are talking styling and design freedom, I hate where we are right now.

If I didn't have to work a full time job I'd probably restomod vehicles from the 60's, 70's and 80's all day long.

OP's poll is flawed, there is good and bad in every decade.

People the question was,

Which decade had the best car designs, not the most aesthetically pleasing.  Folks picking old cars are nuts.

Today's cars are faster, safer, have a better ride and many look better than the old ones.

My son has a Gen5 Camaro, the thing has a V6, goes 0-60 in sub 6 seconds and gets 30 mpg on the highway.  It has bells and whistles that old cars could only dream of.

Cars are MUCH better these days.

You're not wrong, but todays cars are also overly regulated inverted bathtubs on wheels. They contain so much goverment mandated equipment that prices have increased to the point that they are out of reach for people of average means. Unless they finance one for eight years, that is.

The 70's and 80's had the most turds. The 60's and earlier had a lot of really classic designs but were generally slow. The 90's started to show promise with design and power. from about 2005 till today has some of the more power efficient vehicles ever thanks to advancements in technology.

I like the modern technology of todays engines and drive trains, but the appealing looks of the classic cars from the early 70's and back.

True this....but try changing a headlight.  New cars suck when it comes to working on them at home.....even simple stuff.

As much as I loved the 80s, I do think the 60s had the better car designs. They just had a certain soul to them that just smacked of Steve McQueen.
