If you really want to see him smile, swap in some Traxxas motors. They're cheap and will make it scream. My kid was able to do donuts in the garage floor once I did the motor swap.

My daughter had one and only mod I made was to take a junk Dewalt charger and wire it in to the power wires. 18v batteries gave it some more juice and were faster to charge, but didn't last as long as the factory battery. Still fun though.
