Is anything bigger possible? Since 1944 this is still the end all weapon it seems.
Yep. It already has been created.
You think that's just a moon up there? Haven't you seen Star Wars? |
As long as there are humans, I will say yes, most likely we'll figure out how to make bigger and bigger booms.
matter/antimatter is the most energetic reaction we know of right now IIRC.
maybe relativistic kill vehicles. or if we ever harness gravity and make gravity bombs. so yeah the nuke is going to be top dog for a loooooong time |
Antimatter, nuclear fusion, gravitationally slingshotting asteroids.... The list goes on
Portable black hole generator. Set timer, push button, and get the fuck on the other side of the event horizon.
Antimatter weapons. A gram of matter reacting with a gram of antimatter would be roughly equivalent to 2 fat mans going off.
Novabomb, destabilizes sun causing it to go supernova & destroys a star system. or Neutron bomb.
M-16s have killed more people than every atom bomb, so...I guess it depends on your point of view.

Unless we get evidence of space aliens, I don't see any incentive to develop a bigger weapon. We could build larger nukes right now, but what's the point?
Maybe a weapon that targets certain ethnicities or nationalities based on dna markers. |

Read an interesting piece on the RFG / Star Wars programs from the early 90's. If I recall a telephone pole sized rod would have the kinetic energy to level a large city. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

Rods From God / Kinetic Bombardment Read an interesting piece on the RFG / Star Wars programs from the early 90's. If I recall a telephone pole sized rod would have the kinetic energy to level a large city. Yeah, I've seen the telephone pole sized descriptions and the swarm of multiple crowbar sized ones. I gather they would be coming in at around 9km/second. Big bang...not so much glow. |

Books are greater weapons than bombs.
At least that's what my liberal friends tell me. |

View Quote Antimatter weapons Bio Weapons Kinetic energy weapons when you've got a drive that will let you move around the solar system in a reasonable amount of time. Would be trivial to kill anything above single cell life on a planet w/ one. |

I think it's coming soon. It scares me but I wait for it to be real with some kind of morbid curiosity. It would take so many of the negatives associated with nukes off the table but still offer incredible destructive power. It's coming. |

Photon torpedoes, how do they work?
Seriously, how do they work? |

Manmade famine has killed more than nukes did or ever will.
In the wake of a nuke attack, it is famine that will kill everyone who survives the blast. |

Grey goo or swarms of trillions of self replicating microscopic nanobots that consume matter to build more bots. Imagine controlled blobs of nanobots that could be directed to consume anything in an area without any sort of fallout. You could even program them to only attack humans or certain buildings, leaving the surrounding area untouched.
One of the Deus Ex games features a nano machine bomb that is used by terrorists to wipe out Chicago. |

We wont be looking for anything bigger till we have some idea as to why we would need it. Course, we may stumble upon something in the course of discovery. If humanity were to expand to other planets, we would start thinking about ways to end all life on other planets in the event that it becomes necessary to ensure our survival. If evidence of alien life is discovered, even if it is only bacteria or some such, then we will be forced to ponder what threats may present themselves from alien life. Something that before such a discovery would be thought of as a waste of time and resources. All we lack is a motive. |

Some of the stuff is too exotic to be useful.
You could build an antimatter weapon with today's technology. It would be cheaper to just build a nuke. |
