Joel Hodgson? He's the creator / producer / and director of the new season, but only played a very small minor role as a cast member in the new episodes.

The part of the host is played by Jonah Ray

They're both great, but yeah, Joel was overworked and it showed.

Rifftrax is the real spiritual successor to MST3K, imo.

I always thought the Joel dynamic with the Bots was too much like a parent and too indulgent with The Mads. You can tell they shot him into space with about 800lbs of weed.

I'm still going to watch the shit out of the new show though, just like I do with the Rifftrax that are up on Amazon, and a good thing, because I certainly don't have a NAS full of pirated MST3k and RiffTrax to hold me over...

While they were both funny in their own rights, I preferred Joel to Mike... mostly due to the more esoteric riffing of the Joel era and IMO the funnier movie selections.

Time of the Apes, Warrior of the Lost World, Space Travelers, Robot Holocaust, Cave Dwellers, Pod People, Fugitive Alien(s), Master Ninja(s), Manos, all the Gamera and Hercules movies, and on and on.

Mike had some good early ones though like Alien from LA, Outlaw, Zombie Nightmare, Starfighters, the Coleman Francis trilogy, etc.

They still had several Sci Fi era movies that were bigmclargehuge, like Future War, Time Chasers, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank, Parts" Clonus Horror, etc. They even did Squirm.

But there definitely was a tonal shift in the riff writing during the Sci Fi era... by that point they had lost several of their original writers who were responsible for many of the more rarefied and off kilter references. So the "humor" of the show transitioned from being very steeped in references of 60s, 70s and 80s tv, movies and pop culture to being more modern and generalized humor.
