I don't think so.

Is competitive shooting a sport? How you feel about one will directly correlate to how you feel about the other...

Golf is a waste of a good shooting range, motocross park, parking lot, abandoned lot... you see where I'm going with this.

ETA: I am not talking about things like biathlon, which obviously fulfills my 2 requirements. My requirements to be a sport: 1) Has a non-subjective way of determining the winner. This rules out ice dancing, as the only way to win is at the whim of a panel of judges. 2) Requires a high level of physical exertion. Basically, if a person claiming Social Security can compete with 23 year olds, it's not a sport (sorry, golf). |

Accuracy game, not sport.
And I love playing golf. Likewise, shooting. Biathlon, however, is a sport. |

Golf is mostly a sport. Played golf yesterday with some friends and it could hardly be called an athletic event. We had a great time in perfect weather, riding very comfortable carts and drinking very cold beer. Others play golf and it is certainly an athletic event that requires all of one's physical and mental faculties to play and win. I think golf provides its players with a spectrum from recreational to athletic, just like every other sport that is played.

From the interwebs - Sport:
an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment. It's a sport. And a game. And it requires less and/or different physical exertion than other sports and games. Which is fine. Baseball is different than football which is different than swimming which is different than hockey. Different skill sets all around. All sports. I think that if you haven't played golf for a while, most people are apt to underestimate the level of skill and athleticism required to do it well. |

There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.Ernest Hemingway

View Quote Golf does not require "physical exertion" unless your definition of physical exertion is as broad as can possibly be interpreted. Chess technically requires physical exertion, as one must physically exert himself in order to move the pieces. The level of exertion required to play golf is that of leisurely walk, and therefore is not a sport. Also, golf is not a sport because: 1. You can be good at it after a hip replacement. 2. Anything that requires you to iron your shirt before you play is automatically not a sport. Golf, darts, pool, bowling = games that are difficult to master. Not sports. |

if you can't die while participating, it's an activity.
car racing: sport rugby: sport soccer: sport (because you could die of boredom) golf: activity |

The average guy can play any sport competitively with other guys at his same skill level. |

Some shooting disciplines are certainly "sports". USPSA and 3 gun both require shooting and running around (at least it does if you want to do well)
I'd consider Golf a sport, too, though it has much less physical exertion than a lot of other sports. I do find it fun, although I'm terrible at it. |

In order to compete at hockey at a high level, a high level of physical fitness is required. Just because a bunch of fatties can go through the motions doesn't disqualify something from being a sport. You can compete at golf at a high level long after you can get an erection without medication. How many 60 year professional hockey players are there? |
