This is my answer as well. I had an afternoon to kill after getting bumped on a flight out of Cody, was glad I did (too broke to stay another night). I did this drive, not knowing anything about it. My sister was living north of there and I had seen the turnoff. I was blown away, it was breathtaking. Impressive for a Midwesterner. North of the peak are some very rugged mountain sights, and the descent into the valley has high pucker factor. I've driven the highest part of the Blue Ridge Parkway - another beautiful road but on a different scale. View Quote |

Every highway here at home. Rim of the World Highway 18/138/38/173. There's 237 turns, hairpins and off camber esses from the flatlands to the driveway.

Montana 93 from just outside Whitefish down to Missoula is one of my favorites.

Colorado: I-70 from Denver west to Glenwood Springs is beautiful for interstate travel.
Utah: Shafer Trail in Canyonlands NP ridden east to west, exiting via the switchbacks. |

I drive in the NC mountains for fun. Avoiding the blue ridge parkway and never making it far enough west to the great traffic jam that is the Dragon. I have found plenty of superb roads that connect together and provide enough adventure to fill a weekend. You'd better bring brake upgrades and a healthy sense of awareness, because many times the roads are narrow, with a rock wall on one side and several hundred feet of drop off on the other without a barrier. Switchbacks, tight curves and adrenaline.

There will be no suggestions for Michigan. I mean, we have nice scenery at points, but the roads here are made from chunks of the Berlin wall held together with paper mache. View Quote Negative Ghostrider. US 2 from the Mac. bridge to Naubinway is awesome. Right on the lake. Also, 41 out of L'Anse up towards Houghton. Yeah, we drive these often. Our son is at MTU. These are not my favorites but they are pretty great and in Michigan. EDIT> There are other good roads in the UP and up by TC. |

Cherohala is nice if you like to cruise. View Quote Cruise? I have been well into the triple digits on that road...in a car. Dangerous? Yes. Stupid? Without a doubt. Fun? Immensely. I much prefer the Skyway over the Tail of the Dragon. The Dragon is too full of stupid people driving in the wrong lane, minivans going 5 mph, and other hazards that can give you a bad day if you're abusing the speed limit at all. A few years ago a friend of mine hit a guy on a motorcycle who had come over into the wrong lane, and we sort of lost our taste for it after that. |

I know, I know....there is no way to tell which US road is the "best driving road". Everyone likes something different and there are waaay to many to choose from. I've driven some great roads in the Appalachians and the Rockies but that's still a limited scope, I realize. The purpose of this thread is to share with you the road I like the best so far and hopefully y'all will post up your favorites. On to it. The road I've enjoyed the most so far is Texas FM 170 between Redford and Lajitas on the Rio Grande River. It's a rollercoaster ride with a great mix of short straights, then corners and elevation change. I drove it several times last week and never saw a single car on it. No driveways, no homes, no people...nothing. It can be dangerous in places so someone that tends to overdrive corner entry could get in trouble....think blind crest with a sudden off-camber corner with a severe drop off on one side and a solid rock wall on the other. The scenery is fantastic, the road surface is grippy and consistent and after a fun day of driving you can pull into the Lajitas Golf Resort and Spa and have a couple of refreshing beverages in the Thirsty Goat saloon. https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/337680/lajitas1-133475.JPG https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/337680/IMG-3171-133477.JPG https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/337680/IMG-3239-133478.JPG https://www.AR15.Com/media/mediaFiles/337680/IMG-3243-133479.JPG What road is your favorite? View Quote That's not that far from me. I'll have to drive down there one day and check it out, thanks. |

It's been a while since I was on it, but I always enjoyed the stretch of I-70 between Green River and I-15 in Utah, even more when it was still just two lanes.
Good road surface, nice scenery, nothing to put you to sleep. Jay |

Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park in VA, along the Blue Ridge Mountains - is very nice. View Quote This is true. Especially to see the fall colors, and many of my favorite trout streams are accessible. Hike the trails, see wildlife,camp,,... Another, I believe, is called Virginia Highlands Parkway. Route 58 Takes you to Damascus VA.,and the views are sweet. More trout to catch, and rural too. Heck, taking Rt. 81 to get there was nice. If you take the back way out of Harrisonburg, towards McDowell and Monterey in Highland County,it's spectacular too. Called the Scottish Highlands of America. Highlands Parkway, Route 250. There are some cool roads in PA and WVa I'd have to show you all... Route 80 is nice. |

Not the best driving road, but amazing views. This should also be on anyone's list of roads to drive, Miami FL to Key West. Lots of amazing food and places to stop along the way.
