https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/jan/16/germany-hits-back-at-trump-criticism-of-refugee-policy-and-bmw-tariff-threat

In an interview with Bild and the Times, the US president-elect had indicated that he would aim to realign the “out of balance” car trade between Germany and the US.

“If you go down Fifth Avenue everyone has a Mercedes Benz in front of his house, isn’t that the case?” he said. “How many Chevrolets do you see in Germany? Not
very many, maybe none at all … it’s a one-way street.”

Asked what Trump could do to make sure German customers bought more American cars, Gabriel said: “Build better cars.”

The 'Volkswagen scandal' was just a scam on emissions, not quality.

Fucking cars shouldn't even have government mandated emissions control system, as far as I'm concerned.  If the consumer wants it, it should be an options package.  Then let's see how many of these 'SAVE THE EARTH, enlightened progressive' types pay out of their own god damn pocket for it when it's not mandated.

You do realize the VW scandal  is about emissions cheat that actually benefits the consumer, right?  The cheat put in place violates the Federal emissions regulations by failing them but results in better fuel economy for the owners. To pass the emissions results in engine mapping that reduces fuel mileage.....

German cars may have a better fit and finish but they'll cost you more in repairs if you keep cars for a long time.

I do realize it was an emissions issue.

Especially BMW.

Broken
Most
Weeks

Everyone that I know that has owned BMWs complains about the quality over time.  Great new, shit for the long haul.

The number of BMW courtesy cars running around places like Greenville and Atlanta is somewhat shocking.  My brother had a friend that worked for one of the very big dealerships in ATL, and that guy jokingly (sort of) said that you should really buy two BMWs, so one will hopefully be working while the other is in the shop.

Exatcly. Guys, its how our free trade agreements work. You know.....they import them for free into America.....then, any American car is taxed upon entry. Gets a tarriff.  Because thats abfair and equitable deal right????

Stop allowing the importation of them. Fuck germany. Not our friend.

Because emissions have nothing to do with build quality?   Especially when the Federally set mandate goes against what the market (consumer) actually desires....and that's more fuel economy.

That's because most BMWs you see in America where built in Spartanburg SC not Germany.  They aren't imported till you are in the higher end cars, except the 3 series wagon those are still built in Germany.

Same thing applies to other foreign cars manufactured in the US. It's a well known fact in the auto business that quality control goes to hell when the manufacturing is brought to the US.

We should totally punish the car company that does this:

German carmakers employ about 33,000 workers in the United States and German automotive suppliers about 77,000 more...
View Quote

Or this:

Around 65 percent of BMW's production from its factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina is exported overseas. BMW builds the X3, X4, X5 and X6 models in the United States. "It is surprising that Trump singles out the carmaker that exports more vehicles from the United States than any other manufacturer," Evercore ISI analysts said. A BMW spokeswoman said the planned plant in the central Mexican city of San Luis Potosi would build the BMW 3 Series from 2019, with the output intended for the world market. The plant would be an addition to existing 3 Series production facilities in Germany and China.

In June last year, BMW broke ground on the plant, pledging to invest $2.2 billion in Mexico by 2019 for annual production of 150,000 cars.

Yes, Mexico.   There was a BMW plant in NC - is it still open?   It built the SUV/crossover.
A Mexican BMW is not the same as a German BMW.  Just because the German s are also attempting to escape the high wages within Germany (or the non third world countries).

When you have purchasing power like the US, you can bargain for certain things, like making the products close to home.  No one is forcing them to build in the US.  They can still build anywhere they want to in the world, but they'll be subject to tariffs, just like they tariff product coming in to their country.

ZFG.

The only 'scandal' is that US emissions controls are 33% stricter than in the EU. They focus on mileage, we focus on emission output.

And our methodology is somewhat fucked.

IIRC We measure in emissions per gallon. EU measures in emissions per mile. So a car that gets 100mpg and puts out 2 units of emissions is going to fail, but the car that gets 30mpg and puts out 1 unit of emissions is going to pass.

As a Jetta TDI owner waiting for my buyback I am going to have to disagree that the failing federal emissions benefited me in the form of better fuel economy.  The replacement I chose for my Jetta is a BMW 328d that also has a 2.0L diesel just like the Jetta only this one is emissions compliant, has more power(180 hp vs 140 hp), and is a heavier car with AWD yet gets better fuel economy than the Jetta.  Evidently VW just didn't want to put the money into properly developing their diesel engine and decided cheating was the better option.

Aaaaand? Ownership doesn't dictate where design or engineering takes place....only thing Astra has in common with GM is the chassis platform. Everything else is lead out of Europe. Powertrains in them are Opel AG designs too, no GM.

Lick the boots?  Hardly, VW is being forced to buy my car back for nearly exactly what I paid for it 2.5 years ago.  I get to drive a car depreciation free for 2.5 years and get a good excuse to upgrade to a better car.  Why wouldn't I take the deal?
