First thing is you and your buddies are gonna have to pay me back the max contribution to SS that was confiscated and given to you guys for the last 20 years, plus interest.

After that, I don't care, as I am made whole.

On this generally conservative site you are going to get plenty of "I paid into it" and "Just give me my money back" answers.  The unfortunate truth is that it needs to be broken apart and the longer we wait the more painful it will be, but our political climate rewards those that ignore tough problem or at least kick them down the road one more election cycle rather than fixing problems.

Lol.  One termer for sure.

Just look at Obamacare.  The Dems won.  No one is talking about just repealing it.  It's repeal and replace.  We have given in to the need for the government to provide healthcare.

And you want to even look at Social Security.

With no money in the bank (despite lies you get in statements from the government), how do you propose that happen without taxing someone else to make sure you are paid?

The problem is akin to trying to play musical chairs while ensuring everyone has somewhere to sit.

I'm 24.  I vote shut it down.  Give people under 30 nothing back from what they've paid in.  Under 40 give them 30%.  Under 50 50%.  Under 60 70% and let the other keep it.

Not those exact numbers but it obviously needs to go and I'd appreciate just not paying in for the rest of my life.

Baby boomers and the 'greatest' gen made insane entitlement programs that there was no way to really fund long term.

Like the thread saying millenials aren't as well off as their parents. Well, you make the system so expensive that we get the shit taxed out of us, and yes, there won't be a middle class.

I can always look forward to 1/4-1/3 of my money going to all the welfare program and tax withholdigs. It's AMAZING, but also kinda sucks to be unmarried and millenial making good money.

Thanks for all the entitlement programs draining the young workers, fucking old people.

End SS instantly. Enslave all baby boomers and give the proceeds back to the younger generations - with higher percentages going the older adults - until everyone who ever paid into the ponzi scheme is repaid.

Yeah I'm good with it as SS is even something I'm considering for my retirement plans even though I know it will be there is some form. However, I will need a refund on what I have put in there over the last 22 years.

Tiered phase out by age.

Depending on how old you are, you can opt out by a given percentage. Increase IRA/401k contribution limits, plus an increased tax deduction for retirement contributions.

The obvious suggestion is a decades-long phase-out.  As unpalatable as it is, I would pass a law requiring means-testing everyone.  If you have
other financial resources, you get nothing until they are depleted.  So, for me, I would have to spend every penny from my 401K, Roth IRA, real estate,
etc before I would get one penny of Social Security.  Any new people coming into the system would have part of their SS payments go to a self-directed
retirement plan of their choosing and part to SS to fund current people.  It's doable, but it will be painful for everyone.

ETA:  Beat by walldj45.  A slow phase-out.

Never going to happen.  Too many people on SS, SSI, SSDI want their money.  Too many people who've paid into the system their whole lives, they want something back.

I've been paying into social security at the rate of 15% of every paycheck since 1988.

If you want to shut it down, great, then give me back all my money, with compounded interest over the past 26 years, say, 8%.

Repeal and replace/ keep popular parts.  Like coverage for pre-existing conditions and allowing "kids" into their 20's to stay on mommy and daddy's health plan.

First, it won't happen.

I wish that weren't the case, but I have to be realistic.

I would suggest letting young people opt out of the system, just like pastors get to do today.

But that would take a long, long time to ever get anywhere near close to disassembly.

And even that is highly unlikely to happen.

I'd put a tiered system in its stead.

Let's give some arbitrary numbers:

Those eligible to draw social security to about 50 years old, system stays the same with the option for anyone in this group to enter the hybrid group next.

35-49 a hybrid system in which you can choose to have the money that would have been put towards your social security into a public sector 401(k) or any other investment plan. You'd draw some social security from the government when you hit 65.

18-34 your choice on investment opportunity with the money you are no longer paying towards social security   Throw in some sort of voucher given for every year you've put money towards social security.

Republicans only have 52 votes in the Senate, would need at least 60 to do anything to Social Security so it's not going anywhere.

A more realistic scenario would be to broker a deal to increase the retirement age. What would Republicans have to give up though to find at least 8 Democrats willing to go against their entire party? More than it's worth probably.

LOL....Good luck with that.

You would be better served fixing SSDI. That is where the abuse really is and it's something that is "fixable".

For a start no more SSDI approvals till the system has a top to bottom review.

Hire contractor companies to follow current SSDI recipients around (like insurance companies do) to see if they are disabled and revoke their status if they are faking it....Easy.

Shut it down. Repay everyone whose been involuntary taken from and let them invest it however they want, that is the American way.

It is no person's responsibility to manipulate the life of another, regardless of the intentions, that is not American.

It was just another way for the government to get control of another aspect of the people's lives, illegal and incomprehensible in America, should have never been allowed.

Those that pushed it should have been tarred and feathered, same with those that pushed the income tax and the federal reserve and fiat currencies, et al.

These are all instruments of the government's attempted total control over the populace.

Then drain the swamp, shut down every useless government agency, administration, council etc., etc. The IRS needs to be abolished and every official investigated and charged if found guilty, every agency needs to be bleached.

no.

not only no, but fuck no.

as in, "vote from the rooftops no".

i am forced -- under color of law -- to send you money, with the expectation that you give it back, and you don't?
that's either fraud or felony theft, and you should expect a reaction to such criminal activity.

how about we cancel all the existing pensions of government workers, perhaps that would be a different conversation?

I am a baby boomer... 2008 crash hard on my Thrift Savings roll-over (followed by two years of unemployment)... not planning on dying anytime soon.

I have a number of Doctors and medical services  to support after almost dying in early 2009 and early 2013. Trying to live long enough to pay them all off!

I will put in my will to contact you, so you can dump Social Security after that.

I'd go for that.

Shit, I'm 35 and I'd go for getting zero back, as long as I don't have to pay into it. I trust my own retirement investment choices in the stock market over relying on Congress to manage money.

I don't know the numbers, but I suspect it's more realistic for: 40 and under get zero, 40-50 get 30%, 50-65 get 50%, and 65+ get 75%. And we'd probably have to pay into it for 5 more years to make that work.

Then there'd be all kinds of crying and gnashing of the teeth when NBC finds an old lady who can't pay her heat bill in the winter.

Welcome to the Socialist United States of America.
