OP, I use snap caps.  They're cheap, and I figure if nothing else, it won't hurt.

ETA: I hate the new websites' lack of "page views" and "replies".  How are you supposed to know to add "Page 2 ownage! "

There is no reason to use a snap cap in a 1911. This fact is validated by numerous national champions, record holders, US AMU, USMC Pistol Team, and the gunsmiths that built their 1911s.

Without a snap cap or magazine, there is no confusion over loaded or unloaded.

The military teams dry fire numerous times per every live round. They do not use snap caps.

If that's the theory, then a stronger recoil spring would also damage the sear engagement surface.
