"Nah, nobody likes working for company "X", they have horrible pay." Company X either raised their wages or they found themselves getting exactly what they're paying for....less qualified people. I will say, I work in close contact with union people and it's amazing. They literally cannot do anything wrong. Guy walks into girls' bathroom, it's okay, he wasn't done talking to her. Guy starts a fight with someone, it's okay, he falsified a federal document stating what happened and nobody wanted to do the paper work so, the other guy is fired (not union). Girl spends 3-4 hours of a 12 hour shift sleeping in her car......not a problem. Could be different because these are fed employees, but the federal workforce is the biggest union around. |

I have a friend that joined the laborers union a few years ago, his stories are pretty ridiculous.
Like how moving the rebar is his job, but tying it is for the iron workers, so if they are running behind he isn't allowed to jump in and give them a hand. He told me there was almost a fight between supervisors one day because the carpenters weren't supposed to be getting their own lumber, they were just supposed to be using it, so by moving their own material it violated some labor agreement. Sounds like a circus to me. |

Not sure how being dependent on your spouse plays into this. But normally parents, especially bad ass parents, would be willing to give out a beating if they're kid was attacked, I feel sorry for those that didn't have such support. But when you've got a dad like mine you know he's got your back. You guys probably heard of him. He's from TX, he was also a Ranger, last name Walker. I do believe you've come to realize who he is.... Yes, my daddy is Chuck Norris.

I would suggest that any large corporation would prefer to deal with employees individually. They do it all day, every day. Every asshole has a boss, that boss is capable (ostensibly) of determining an employee's ongoing value to the organization and allowing for raises, changes in PTO and other benefits. Is your argument that unions provide value to the employer in that they don't have to negotiate with individuals? Because, that's how the ENTIRETY of the non-union world runs. There's no value to the employer from the union .... if unions were beneficial to employers, they wouldn't need federal legislation that protected their very existence. It wouldn't be necessary. If you ever want to figure out when something is harmful and unneeded in commerce, all you have to do is look at what it takes to get rid of it. If there's a law saying it has to stay, it's probably a bad idea, on its face. |

Never been union, but I've worked several places where a lot of the blue-collar work was unionized, it could be fucking ridiculous.
At GE - need a power strip with a twist-lock connector to go in a rack in the data center. TWO electricians come out holding it between them. Oh, and they scheduled all of their work for after hours, but "worked" a daytime shift, meaning they goofed off or slept in their office all day and any real work was overtime. At Cox Communications - first week I was on the job, the electrician first shut off power to the data center because his breakers were mislabeled, then a few days later he bumped into the emergency power-off button because he didn't have a cover over it. Later gets promoted to "data center manager" and fires the guy who had been racking and cabling all of our servers so he could have the union electricians do it. Who immediately stopped following the color coding standards for network cables (black for console, blue for normal data, pink for crossover, etc) and regularly stripped threads and heads off bolts using their power drills. |

There is a huge amount of work and cost involved in performance appraisals metrics etc. Under a union contract everyone person gets paid the same for the same work. Business save money there. Raises are negotiated every few years at a very low cost to the employer. In FL unions have very little power. The union contract brings consistency to discipline. The good sides outweigh the bad sides for a company in a right to work State Like FL. |

Yep, fuck a union. In the 90's I had to deal with one during a start up of the equipment I was installing. They had a crane that moved cylinders around that we plated. I couldn't run the crane, and they required 2 people to run it. One to hold the control and one to fuck off and do nothing. The next day I went in the break room and about a half dozen of the turds were sitting in there. I had already ratted them out. One of them said "you' re pretty brave coming in here". I calmly walked over to him and asked him if he knew who the fuck I was. They're all sitting there looking like they're getting ready to jump. He said no or something, I can't really remember. So then I asked them if they would like I could call the barracks and have my old man and the rest of the State Police come over and beat the living fuck out of them. That he would be glad to beat some pussy union ass because they really didn't like them or the people they worked for. Where I grew up nobody fucked with the SP, and my dad worked organized crime, so he really didn't like them. I proceeded to dress him down in my best DI manner. They backed down and I never had an issue with them. Someone probably checked and found out I wasn't lying. Anyway, they ended up closing the place down because of all the bullshit, so they all lost their jobs within a year or two. Fuck em... LOL. GD is the best. Yep, they were thinking about it, and if they did I guarantee you they'd be worse off and they knew this. Dad was a bad ass, still is. I used to work for a company in Jax that was non-union. A few people decided to try to unionize it and were basically told to fuck off by damn near everyone that worked there. Nobody wanted anything to do with them.

They get the benefit of the union negotiations, benefits and other union wins without paying dues. I never saw anyone that wasn't a union member take any real grief for it and we were about 97%.
