If the military doesn't end up deposing him, Ducherte will end up having to make up his mind: either be allied with the US or with China. He cannot be truly independent as a maritime island nation because the Philippines has no Navy (3 US donated Coast Guard cutters with no missiles) and no Air Force (12 Korean FA-50 trainer/fighters, no AEW). They are ENTIRELY and COMPLETELY reliant on (pick a superpower) to defend their interests.

Nevermind the extrajudicial killing of thousands in a war on drugs where you are invited to kill anyone you think is involved.  Turns out this guy used to have his own personal deaths squads when he was the Mayor of Davao! He has elected senators hiding in fear of their lives.

What a lunatic!

Meanwhile, the economic chaos this guy's mercurial politics have spawned resulted in the Philippine Peso being at its worse exchange since 2009 and S&P is threatening to cut their credit rating!

While I like the idea of drug dealers being offed by any means, I doubt that Duterte is stopping at just "drug dealers" nor are those who are using his call to go kill them just killing drug dealers.  I have little doubt that political enemies, business enemies or any enemy period are being taken down too by everyone involved.  Its very possible the violence will multiply and go out of control in some areas leading to further destabilization.
Although it would be hard to tell in the Philippines since it is such a fucked up corrupt shit hole as it is.

Has anything actually legitimately changed?  He said no more joint U.S.-Filipino patrols outside of their waters.  Obviously that's irrelevant because if you took the boat from Jaws, that would be one of the best ships in the whole Filipino fleet, so they effectively bring nothing to the table there.

Is the use of the old bases still going to happen?  The shit in the south was pretty much shut down outside of key personnel by late 2013.

I know for a fact that many Filipinos despise him and don't agree with what he is doing as President. The country has been polarized into pro and anti-Duterte sides ever since the elections. Very similar to the political climate here, the arguments between the two sides have been less than... civil.

Meh.... let them.

The US for the most part has a horrible history of leaving allies and partners to be fucked over.

We allowed Vietnam to collapse.

We didn't lift a finger to support Georgia or Ukraine.

We told Honduras that they need to keep a man in office that violated their Constitution and told their military and Supreme Court that they're bad for actually following their constitution.

We have shitted on the Kurds.

We destabilized the Middle East and at the same time supported a regime in Iran that crushed a pro western movement that wanted to overthrow the radical religious regime running the place.

We call on the world to support us in our endeavors and as a thank you when they ask for ir help we tell them to piss up a rope.

The UK did the same to the Commonwealth after WWII. It asked all of its colonies to support the mother country in two wars against Germany and then casted them to the abyss because of the "feelz" of the winds of change.

The Philippines wanted us out and we left. But while we were there.... we didn't do much.

I'm not going to shed a tear for drug dealers, but extra judicial killings with out the benefit of due process, will eventually come back to bite the people n th ass.  From what I understand there are real druggies and pushers getting killed, but at the same time it's a perfect opportunity to "get rid" of people you don't like with out much political attention.  this is only going to end in two ways, the Philippino prez getting offed or the country devolving into civil war and someone we don't like stepping in to pick up the pieces like say the Chinese who will save money on not having to build a new island to base their brown turning in to blue navy to make port.

Philippines has a population of 100mil. They spend a mere 1.3% of their GDP on defense because they have a guarantee that the USA will defend them and we provide direct military aid by providing our troops, aircraft, and donating equipment. (world average is 2.4%). Ducherte has basically said that he wants this defense guarantee with no strings attached, not even diplomatic teamwork.

Consider what PI switching "sides" to China means. China could offer to "give back" the Philippines Exclusive Economic Zone in the South China Sea in exchange for a defense treaty that included military basing options and predeployment of missiles. PI literally stretches from just off the coast of Taiwan across the Luzon Strait, the main islands, and through the Sea of Celebes and Sulu Sea right down to the coast of Borneo. Plus Palawan commands the Eastern flank of the SCS.

Right now China only hazards ships entering the SCS from the Strait of Taiwan. Philippines basing rights would put China in a position to hazard any vessel attempting to enter the SCS from the East using land based antishipping missiles. The only entrance not controlled by China would be the south entrance via Malaca/Karimata Straits. This is potentially a huge victory for China and a huge defeat for the US and its allies.

The South China Sea would become a Chinese lake.

So what you're saying is that welfare for National Defence provided by the United States has put the Philippines in a position to where they cannot defend themselves because they're a bunch of lazy asses.

Sounds exactly like the situation with Europe when it comes to us providing them defense against the Russians and then they lambaste us for not having free healthcare, socialism, and free education.

SHITTY COMPARISON: NATO countries do fight along side and train along side the US, we usually have congruent diplomacy against foes, they are murdering their people in the streets, and they aren't siding with the Russians against us. Also, PI doesn't have a treaty stipulated %GDP target like NATO.

Up until this point, they have worked closely with us and provided us a great strategic advantage.

But we didn't ratify UNCLOS and China is owning the PI EEZ in the SCS. China said "we don't respect UNCLOS rulings US hasn't ratified the treaty." I strongly suspect China also influenced the PI elections and is offering a sweeter deal to the PI than the US behind the scenes.

And so China is getting what they want. It might not be too late. Ratify UNCLOS and let Ducherte expire his term or be the subject of a coup, and make sure we counter Chinese influence in their elections. Any new rational candidate would then side with the US.
