In 1970, when originally offered the lead role in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory by director Mel Stuart, the great Gene Wilder accepted on one condition. "When I make my first entrance,” he
explained, "I'd like to come out of the door carrying a cane and then
walk toward the crowd with a limp. After the crowd sees Willy Wonka is a
cripple, they all whisper to themselves and then become deathly quiet.
As I walk toward them, my cane sinks into one of the cobblestones I'm
walking on and stands straight up, by itself; but I keep on walking,
until I realize that I no longer have my cane. I start to fall forward,
and just before I hit the ground, I do a beautiful forward somersault
and bounce back up, to great applause." Asked why, Wilder said, "Because
from that time on, no one will know if I'm lying or telling the truth."

I always enjoyed his teamwork/friendship with Richard Pryor.  I guess he can say hi to his old friend now.

i looked him up every now and then, he was the type of guy you had to look for and find, not the type of people that sit in the spotlight and try to grab attention.

Favorite Gene Wilder movie scene was when he quoted Shakespeare in Willy Wonka: "So shines a good deed in a weary world"

That, and the "We bad!" scene with Richard Pryor in Stir Crazy.

Good bye to a great.

Loved him in the Mel Brooks movies.

But when he and Pryor got together, hilarity ensued, always.

Big fan of Stir Crazy, Silver Streak, and Hear No Evil, See No Evil.

RIP Gene.

He was one of those rare comics who didn't need to resort to curse words or vulgarities to make you laugh. He was genuinely funny.

He was a comedic genius and made the roles he played iconic.  Blazing Saddles and Willy Wonka wouldn't have been anything like they are without his unique style.  His partnering with Richard Pryor resulted in some of the funniest movies ever.  Sad to see one of the last great comedy actors gone.

Every one of his movies was entertaining and worth
the price of admission.

Can't say that about a lot of actors any more.
