While I did get to see many cool places (and some not so cool) during my time in the Marines, I feel that I've neglected to see to the beauty which was my own country! This was the perfect time to hit the road for a month and experience new places. I thought I would share some crappy iPotato pics with y'all.

1st stop Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas.

Ok... Done with Arkansas. Apparently all you have are gay bath houses. Holy crap, I went to a Walmart there and it blew my little Georgia town out of the water

Next stop, New Mexico. Almost gave up driving through the Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma.

Unfortunately we arrived late and didn't have time to head into the backcountry to find a campsite, but it was nonetheless beautiful.

Coming next, Colorado.

We arrived in Colorado Springs the next day. That afternoon we headed up into the Pike National Forest.

Nice simple sleep set-up you got there with the wood platform. You run the AC in the truck if it's hot or is the weather cooperating?

Looks like a really cool trip. Things I still want to do...or have done...you might pick from my list....

Petrified forest...to do
Zion Ntnl Park...to do
Yellowstone...done did (need several days)
Prairie dog hunting...want to go again but easy to do in WY (no license needed, just your hunter safety course)
Glacier national park...to do
dinosaur national monument...to do
Como Bluff dinosaur dig....(it was closed when I went there) you can walk out to the old dig and still pick up pieces of fossil..I wanted some for my kids.
Moab...todo
arches.....to do

Check the maps....there are ghost towns you can visit too

I will be doing what you are doing one day.

Surprisingly, I have met a lot of Georgians in this area.

We're planning on going to Zion, Petrified NF. Rocky Mt NP is next, followed by Wyoming. So this prairie dog hunting can be done on public lands correct? Damn. Should have brought my RECCE

A lot of the southern Idaho drive is painfully boring too. When we did our Yellowstone tip we decided to go north on the way back and take I-90 through Spokane and then back down to I-84, ended up only being like 15 more miles.

Yes. Most of their habitat is BLM land. Sporting goods stores will probably have the BLM maps for the area or stop a local office. The maps will show you BLM land, state land and private property. Basically you can hunt "varmints" year round on public land so prairie dogs and coyotes are gtg...

Go buy a scope and mount to throw on that pistol build. You can walk through PD country and have a ton of shot within 100 yards. They will pop up and start barking at you..

If it is not too far out of the way, make it to the Southern Oregon coast, drive up the coast, continue into WA State, cross the Cascades going back East. If you headed to Idaho, take WA 20 through the Cascades if you get way North.

I only had one afternoon to throw it together before the trip. It's just plywood and 10"x2" boards. I use two sleeping pads and a memory foam mat. Pretty comfortable!

Tell me about the weather in Colorado, I'm going there next week!  Going to/through Colorado Springs and on to Pike National Forest (Lost Creek Wilderness).

Will probably camp somewhere around 8,000-10,000 ft. elevation.  Forecast says highs in mid 70's and lows in the 30's.  I figured it would only get cold at night in the late hours but your wife is wearing a jacket during the day.  Was that a morning pic?  I was just going to bring a pullover/fleece and a few layers but now I'm thinking I better bring a jacket.

Did you take Hwy. 24 west out of Colorado Springs?

That's almost exactly where I went. It stays in the mid 50's low 60s during the day, and seems to get upper 30's low 40's at night. I'm in shorts when I hike, pants and a long sleeve shirt around camp, and jacket w/ beanie during the evening. Colorado Springs was in the 70's. I'm good with a north face fleece and a German Gore-Tex jacket.

Enjoy Cheyenne while it is still habitable. In the winter that place is brutal with all the wind and snow.

So what are your overall thought of Colorado and Wyoming?

If you go through a little town in Wyoming called Dubois, stop at the cafe and have a piece of homemade pie. Great little cowboy town in the Windriver range. AlsO, Rocky National Park is in my backyard and I'm a native of Wyoming. pretty spoiled out in the front range.

Colorado has been incredible. There are so many different types of scenery. I felt like I needed months to explore it all ( will be coming through again on the way back). My wife's family has a condo in Glenwood Springs, so I should be able to see Colorado with snow this winter.

I don't really have an opinion of Wyoming yet. Looks like I'll be driving through Debois tomorrow on the way to the Tetons, I'll be sure to stop in if I can!

On a different note... Grand Teton is Grizz territory right? I'll be getting some bear mace but are Winchester Super-X 1oz slugs enough around the campsite?

Finally made it to the Grand Tetons this afternoon. Over 2,800 miles so far. My truck setup is working perfectly. It's really allowing us to get to places where you could only go if you had 4x4; which is the point.

I try to make camp before 5pm, so I have plenty of time to set up cooking stuff, plan hikes, and do whatever needs to be done around camp. I'll take plenty of pictures tomorrow around the national park.

Taken with phone + filters from the same spot where Ansel Adams took his famous photo in 1942.

Drove through Yellowstone today. It's a HUGE and very diverse national park, but I think my bar was set a little too high from Rocky Mountain NP, and Grand Tetons NP. I didn't take many pics because I was pissed off the whole time because of awful Asian drivers, and there's only so many bubbling-sulphur holes you can see before you get bored.

Finally saw a small grizz. Bears are basically Bigfoot to me, because I haven't seen one since Tennessee. Saw a ton of elk, bison, and mule deer. I would have loved to have seen a pack of wolves, but no luck. Old Faithful was meh to me I think I'm a Debbie downer because there were so many damn people. I like my solitude...

Awesome, took those exact same pics with my kids  couple years ago. You missed the tourist who walked out into the geyser field a couple weeks ago. He fell through into a boiling couldron and was never recovered.

FYI, you can backpack in Yellowstone, you need a back country permit. You can carry a handgun but no open fires.

Bridger Teton national forest is cool too if you don't want to deal with NP rules. Access it from the south end, through Cora. Drive north, take the route that goes to Green River Lake. It beautiful. Camp, fish, try to nail a coyote or some of the big rats that are running around.
