I am watching Hondo right now. I had never seen a movie with an in shape John Wayne before, I guess. I have to say it's close to a tossup between Wayne and Clint Eastwood. I'm going to go with Clint Eastwood. Is this sacrilege?

The answer is John Wayne.

If you disagree, you are a communist.

John Wayne defined the "Cowboy" persona.

Clint Eastwood is definitely a distant second. The spaghetti westerns were awful. What the Italians know about cowboys and the West they could stuff up where the sun doesn't shine.

Lots of good ones, Sam Elliot is very believable in that role.

Speaking of Italians; I am watching and I'm pretty sure the main Indian in this movie is an Italian dude. He even seems to have a quasi European accent. It's pretty funny once you notice it.

I'd have to say Ben Johnson, or Harry Carey Jr.    Both actually lived the life of a buckaroo and could act. This is why Ford used them so often. Another would have to be Glen Ford, had been taught cowboying by Will Rogers, and was reportedly a jack of all trades in real life.

No, it's ignorance.

Henry Fonda was even better than Clint.

ETA Ward Bond is another actor better than Clint.

It's a toss up, but not between John Wayne, and Clint Eastwood.  It's a toss up between Clint Eastwood, and Robert Duvall.

ETA: I have to throw Chuck Conners in here as well.

The Duke, because was a real life tough guy, in college he used to go into bars to pick fights.
He was also able to talk to real life gunfighters since there were still a few of them around at the time.
If you pay close attention you will notice that on his gun belt he has one rifle round stuck in a cartridge loop along with all the pistol rounds.
Old time gunfighters told him this tip, when reloading, when you slid your hand along the row and hit the longer rifle round that was a warning that you were down to your last six.
Supposedly he was offered the role of the sheriff in High Noon but, having talked to many old time western types, found the plot too far fetched. In the Old West the baddies would have been met on the train platform by every man in town, equipped with a rifle.

John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson in the few films he did. Alan Ladd is definetly a favorite in Shane.

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean

Monte Walsh--the original with Jack Palance, not that dreadful remake

The Professionals (kinda outside the genre, as it takes place in 1910 in and along Mexico)

The Outlaw Jose Wales

ETA: oh snap, I thought the title was "best western/cowboy movie",  not actor. . sorry, but in my defense,  I do have a bad cold. . .and I'm on vacation. .

No best one:

John Wayne
Clint Eastwood
Sam Elliot
Robert Duvall
Tom Selleck
Charlton Heston
Slim Pickens
Walter Brennan
Harry Dean Stanton
Ben Johnson
Hell, even Kevin Costner and Scott Glenn did good cowboys!
