I too believe it is a real object.  Where it is, we may never know.  Could have been destroyed during the many centuries since it was last seen

There's a weird church in Ethiopia that claims to have it.

Supposedly there is evidence to support their claim.

A Coptic Church.

They seem more credible than most, if it still exists.

It was made of wood and gold.   The wood has probably long since rotted into dust and the gold has probably been melted down and recast many times over by now.

Saw a documentary where they said they had it. The interviewers asked to see it.  NO, they said, no one can see it. Red flags, anyone?

This.

Very common, back in ancient times, for valuables to be looted/melted down, etc.

I vote for it being hidden within the Temple Mount, yet undiscovered. Wouldn't be surprised if the Dome of the Rock was over it, and the Muslims were unaware.
I believe that finding it, would cause the Jews to want to rebuild the Temple, and remove the Dome of the Rock to do so.

Alexander the Great could have been just a myth.

Be careful taking skepticism to an extreme.    There's a whole lot of accepted and established history that hangs its hat on relatively little evidence.

Why would it be at the Temple Mount?   The Jews lost the Ark when the first temple, Solomon's Temple was destroyed when the  Babylonians utterly destroyed Jerusalem.

The second Temple that Harod built was torn down by the Romans when they sacked Jerusalem.

With everything that happened at the site of the Temple from the time of the Babylonian exile to the sacking under Titus, I would bet the Ark was either removed or destroyed (parted out for the gold) long before the Jews returned from exile.

The Arch of Titus in Rome, depicts, in detail the objects the bible describes as being in the Temple. The Romans sacked the Temple and plundered the items.   (religious issues aside, this is a damning bit of evidence against those who claim there was never a Jewish temple in Jerusalem)

The one thing not depicted is the Ark. It was not in the Holy of Holies in the second Temple.

Traditional Jewish sources combined with authoritative Jewish works say the Ark remains within the Temple mount.

If they, or anyone, has it I don't think it's something they need to prove.

I don't think it would be something they would want publicity about.
