When I was a kid we had one go by with the music playing every day during the summer months.
We would run home and get a quarter from mom when ever we heard the music coming . |

I live three blocks from the Children's Museum; Saturday and Sunday reverberate with Pop Goes the Weasel.

My buds uncle did 8 years in Lewisburg, PA.
for selling more than just fudgesickles from his truck. That's a scary place for a Mr Softee driver. |
We live in a spread out sub division in the county. We get an ice cream about twice a week. I get a strawberry shortcake once a week. Those things are awesome.

One comes around my neighborhood, his music drives my dogs crazy. Local kids dig it.

My town is pretty small -- too small to have regular ice cream truck service. Still, a couple of times each summer I hear one. Must be somebody who comes into town for a couple of days . . .
But the real reason I came here is to say that I drove one of those trucks one summer. In 1979 I came home from college without a summer job so I answered a newspaper ad. The next day I was driving around the streets of north St. Louis County (at the southern edge of Ferguson) ringing a bell and slinging bomb pops. Did it all summer long. In hindsight, it was a pretty shitty job but I did it. Ate a lot of ice cream that summer . . . |

One hits our neighborhood every now and then.
I work near a popular park, and they come through there often. I grew up three doors down from a guy who had a small fleet of them in his garage, so I heard them pretty often as a kid. |
Yes. He never stops and drives at 35mph in a 25. I'm convinced he's slinging drugs out of it lol. No he's not Big Perm.
Gotta tell the kids they only play the music when he's out of ice cream.
We have a super creeper muslim guy in our neighborhood, he looks like a kidnapper. I love bomb pops though, so I'll deal with him. |
hell yeah the one that rolls through around here is really good homemade ice cream too, not that prepackaged bullshit
We do, and he keeps coming by at like 9pm when I've already put my son to sleep. I have money waiting on the counter to run out and chase him down.
Yes. Last yearn they never stopped. It was December and 40 degrees and they still came around.
Not where I grew up. Too rural. I was always told that when the music is playing the truck is out of ice cream.

In my area, the ice cream trucks stick to the poorer neighborhoods.

That ice cream truck got busted for drugs a few weeks later. Kharn |

When I was young they were jeeps that rang a bell that you could hear a long way off.

They drive down the road once in a while. I don't live in a development, so IDK if the guy is just killing time or what. |
More importantly, when was the last time your ice cream truck made a sale?

Everytime I've seen one in the past 10yrs, it's been shitty, rusted out rapemobiles driven by jenky looking guys. No thanks.

Yes, we've got two here that drive through pretty regularly. At least twice a day during the Summer months. They're both ghetto as hell rusted up vehicles. One is an Astro van, faded lime green with a horrible loud speaker blasting dopey music, but cheap prices. The other is some type of renovated Wonderbread delivery van. I swear the guy that drives that is a crackhead. He's always slowing down and chatting up girls walking the sidewalks and his prices are ridiculous.
Not what I remember as a kid. |
The other day we had a ice cream cart in our neighborhood. The kind you push. And a guy in front of him in on the turn in from of my house with a portable speaker for the music.
LOL. |
Yes, there is a FSA apt complex at the entrance to our neighborhood I occasionally hear that music drift through the neighborhood, but they done come into our hood Not enough ankle biters |

Families with money probably have ice cream in the freezer. Also, in poorer neighborhoods folks tend to be outside or they're more likely to have the windows open and can hear the bell. Ultimately, poor people are more likely to waste money on temporary pleasures. It's been 35 years since I drove a bomb-pop truck but at that time the inner city routes were the most coveted areas. The suburban routes sucked. I had everything from housing projects to nice homes. I stayed out of the good neighborhoods. |
we had at least two of them, and both were very annoying. One played "La Cucaracha" all the time and the other one did Christmas tunes. And you'd hear them all damn day.
Earlier this summer, they just.... disappeared. Yay. Was hoping local noise ordinance was invoked on them. |

Some guy that looks like Charles Manson drives thru my area.
The music from that truck would drive me crazy. A loudspeaker constantly repeats the same ~12 piano notes from 1970's movie The Sting. |
I didn't see one last summer, but this summer one has started showing up.
Yep, I was walking my dog the other day and heard some music...
Turned around and it was an ice cream truck! |
