Years ago I got tired of briquettes and the lump charcoal wasn't readily available around here. Recently I happened to pickup one of those lil Lodge grills at the scrap yard for $10 thinking I would try this fancy lump stuff.

Holy crap, this shit gets H.O.T!

I bought some lamb chops to try this lump char coal out on and didnt really want to use lighter fluid as it would make them taste funny (Most likely) and change the flavor I was hoping for with the charcoal and the charred lamb fat.

Then inspiration struck, I would use 91% rubbing alcohol to light the lump with. Then I realized that while the Alcohol wouldn't leave any residual flavors behind, it would most likely just burn off too quick to light the lump efficiently.

Then it came to me, just like I add diesel to the gas When I light the burn pile so it doesn't flash up and burn my beard off, I could add Vegetable oil to the Alcohol to get a longer burn!

Worked great and only took 20ish min for the charcoal to be ready.

Not only did the lump cook the chops in less that 2 min, I got a really nice char without over cooking the meat due to the ultra high heat.

I burned all the hair off my hands flipping the chops, but man were they tasty.

Now Im so hooked on the high heat cooking using lump coal, I might just retire my gas grill.

Buy a charcoal chimney.  It is the best way to get charcoal going.

Lump coal for the win! Did the vegetable oil burn off good? Seems like it might be smoky and linger around....I'll have to try it though.

Agreed
And if you want a slow low heat fire for cooking ribs, pork butt etc, use a starter cube

This. It's a little challenging on windy days, but it's my preferred method. I never use lighter fluid anymore.

The way the FPNI almost every fucking time is God damned uncanny.

Some scientist should study this phenomenon.

I like to use the Green Egg all natural charcoal starters , they do not leave a taste on the charcoal because they have no chemical shit in them and get lump charcoal going easily.

A little wind is a good thing! More draft. The chimney actually protects the flame IMHO.  I never have an issue other than if it's a have down pour.

Like others have said, buy a chimney.

You can still use your idea with one of those, too. I light my chimney with a couple wadded paper towels that are partially soaked with used cooking oil. It helps to make sure that the paper burns long enough to light things well.

Buy chimney.  Fill with lump. Place on top of gas grill side burner. Ignite.  Wait 8 minutes.  Pour. Cook.

A chimney is on the short list now that I have had my come to charcoal-Jesus moment.

Do the chimneys hold enough to fill the grill or do you add more on top of the lit coals?

And yes, the oil burned off completely by the time the coals were ready, smelled great cooking off too.

This.

And I don't use lump in my grills, but usually go low and slow anyway.

I use Royal Oak lump mixed with Kingsford in my smoker, really easy to hold the temp.

I guess that depends on your grill, how hot you want it, how long you're gonna cook,...

I only fill mine about 1/2 way for my smoker, WSM 18".  I have seen a smaller chimney, too, and will buy it next time I see it.

I don't use it for my grills.  I cheat.  I have Weber Performer Platinums, with propane ignition.

Best way to light lump is a heat gun, core lit in 20-30 second, then just wait for the egg to get to desired temp, maybe 15 minutes for grilling.  You are all using big green eggs, right?

Even faster than the chimney is a butane torch and something to fan the coals with.  I've got a torch that goes on the butane canisters that you use with those single burners stoves; hit the coals with that until they are glowing red then fan them with something- I use a plastic lid off of some crackers that I had sitting around.  Takes like five minutes to have a glowing bed of coals; be careful of sparks.

'Nuther vote for the large Weber (7416) Rapid Fire chimney starter and a few sheets of crumpled newspaper (a tablespoon or so of old vegetable oil on the newspaper guarantees a quick start).

I have a Weber chimney, I far prefer my electric starter. Just shove into the lump, plug it in and come back in 10 minutes.

The newspaper can sometimes burn out before the coals light, so I drizzle about a tablespoon of cooking oil over the newspaper first.

What ratio do you use? I've found (and I won't claim it couldn't be something I'm doing wrong...) it difficult to maintain an even, low temp with lump.

Take a chimney starter and place it over your ribeye for 90 seconds each side... Place a grill grate over the top and cook the steak another 90 seconds each side and your done...
