A commodore responsible for three Norfolk Naval Station-based warships was relieved of his command duties Wednesday, according to Lt. Cmdr. Myers Vasquez, a Naval Surface Force Atlantic spokesman.
Rear Adm. Roy Kelley, commander of Carrier Strike Group 12, relieved Capt. Anthony L. Simmons, commodore of Destroyer Squadron 2, citing loss of confidence in his ability to lead resulting from his failure to follow the exemplary conduct expected of commanders. He has been reassigned to Naval Surface Force Atlantic. Simmons took command of the destroyer squadron, which includes the USS Mitscher, USS Winston S. Churchill and USS Forrest Sherman, in March. He was replaced by Capt. Erik Eslich, the Navy said. http://www.military.com/daily-news/2016/08/25/warship-commodore-relieved-command-duties-navy-says.html |

I wonder what happened. Did he violate the first commandment of command, thou shalt not show thy rod to thy staff?

What did he do, send dick picks to an Ensign?

USS Winston S. Churchill ? I never knew we named ships in honor of foreign people View Quote U.S.S. Comte de Grasse (named after the French Admiral who, IIRC, commanded the French fleet at Yorktown). Foreign places, too, like the U.S.S. Canberra, named in honour of a RAN warship that went down off Savo Island. I'm pretty sure there are more, I just can't remember the names off of the top of my head right now. There have additionally been foreigners who died in our uniform (and who were never citizens) who have had ships named after them. It's hardly some novel or unprecedented thing. Nothing wrong with it, either, as long as it's for the right reasons. Honouring our allies is certainly no wrong. Whatever his flaws before, during, and after the war, Churchill was one of the principal leaders of one of our greatest wartime allies We even have (or at least had; not sure if it's still going on) an exchange programme with the RN, whereby we swap officers, and the RN officer serves aboard the Churchill. The first such officer can even be seen in the pictures taken at the Churchill's commissioning ceremony. |

http://i.imgur.com/paQMn8Z.png The captain who led Destroyer Squadron 2 was cashiered Wednesday amid an investigation into inappropriate conduct.
Capt. Tony Simmons, head of the Norfolk-based squadron, was fired by Carrier Strike Group 12 head Rear Adm. Roy Kelley on Wednesday after an investigation prompted a "loss of confidence in his ability to command," according to an official release. "Capt. Anthony L. Simmons was relieved of his duties by Kelley due to loss of confidence in his ability to command as a result of failure to demonstrate the exemplary conduct expected of those in command," the Naval Surface Force Atlantic release said. An investigation found evidence Simmons allegedly made passes at an enlisted sailor on liberty and then was dishonest with his superiors when confronted about it, according to two Defense Department officials familiar with the investigation who were not authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation. https://www.navytimes.com/articles/destroyer-squadron-boss-fired-amid-misconduct-probe In any case of otherwise inexplicable male circumstance, cherchez la femme. If he is still in the military, is he even allowed to reply to the media? I'd think that would be a violation, in itself,

USS Winston S. Churchill ? I never knew we named ships in honor of foreign people Winston Churchill was a better American than some US presidents I could name. Winston Churchill is one of only 8 to be honored as honorary US citizens by an act of Congress. He is one of only two to have been so honored while living (Mother Theresa being the other) A Sandhurst graduate and cavalry officer who fought on 4 continents. Former First Lord of the Admiralty. Nobel Prize in literature for his wartime speeches. The only foreign head of state to reside in the White House in the absence of the President and, as noted, the son of an American mother. The honor belongs to the US to have a ship so named. |
