I recently had some routine blood work done, and my doctor sent me an email instructing me to log on to their website to access my results. After creating a personal password, I was able to access not only the new lab results, but also an electronic copy of my medical records. After perusing my record, I was startled to see two questions in my record.
Does patient have guns in the house : Yes Does patient lock all guns in his safe: Yes I couldn't understand how this information got there (I'm very careful about letting people know what I have), so I asked my other family members if they had been asked these questions at the doctors office. My son replied that when he was about 12 years old, the doctor asked him these two questions. My son is now 26 years old. I'm a bit outraged that they would ask a minor questions like this, then incorporate this information into MY medical record; a record that could be hacked and shared with who knows who. Is this now common practice everywhere, or just something we've come to accept in the "Free State" of Maryland. |
|
Common practice everywhere but some doctors don't toe the AMA gun hating line and just ignore the question.
|
|
Have you asked your doctor about how the information got in there? |
|
I'm going to go out on a limb and and say posting on here identifies you as a gun owner....
Wouldn't worry about it if your doctor knows about it too... |
|

Went to the Doc last week-
Apparently I have cataracts. She wanted to know when I first noticed the problem. I explained it was first noticed when I was trying to sight in an (AIR) gun in the backyard. |

This begs another question- what IF my son told him I keep a gun under my pillow and under a cushion of the couch. I know insurance companies have access to your records if billed through them, so I assume this personal information is probably shared with them; information they have no right knowing. |

I have an online account with a practice like you describe. I just checked it for updates, and there is no mention of being a gun owner. Neither the specialist or primary care doctor has ever asked about guns. |

Ask the kids, just like the Nazis and the Commie Russians did.

View Quote Probably 99.9% of the visitors to this site own guns, but the only thing I know about "beardog 30" is that you claim to reside in the US. I don't know if you lock all your guns in a safe, or whether they're scattered around the house. I just didn't expect this information to be asked when going in for a sore throat! |

I think it's a federal mandate that those two questions be physically present in a well visit chart, and also that the fields are checked "yes" or "no". I think most doctors don't really care to ask or care about the answer and just check "no" for 99% of patients seen unless something is volunteered or grossly worrisome for self-harm.

OP, every medical practice/insurance company has a process for correcting medical records. Submit a correction pointing out that you don't have any guns and think they are icky. If they say that the information came from your son's medical records, slam them for a HIPAA violation, as they are revealing his medical records.
|
|
They asked your son because he's less apt to lie or know the reason for the lie.
Guess who has access to med records now that Obama care and electronic recordkeeping mandates? Oh yeah, the feds. Never tell the truth. |
|
That's interesting.
I have never been asked that question, but after reading this thread, I guess it is possible, perhaps even likely, that this is part of my personal medical information for the reason being that for years I have requested my eye doc under correct my right eye glasses prescription so I can more easily focus my right eye on the front sights of my firearms. Hmmmmmm...... |

MY DOC HAS SEEN MY WEAPON, SHE'S() SEEN MY GUN!
She() knows I ain't fighting, and I'm not much fun. |

My previous Family Physician knew I had guns because he and I had been to the range before. My Cardiologist does because he's a duck hunter.
I was asked once. I glared at the nurse and she skipped over the question. |

Just call the doctor and tell him you don't own any guns, and never have. They're icky.

Don't worry. Lois Lerner and other folks in the government will not harm you.

Me: "Do you have any firearms in the house?"
Doc: "Are you a closet freak that masturbates?" Doc: "That's NONE of your business !!!!" Me: "Exactly. Have a nice day." And then I would leave. I had a great doc and she up and disappeared. The practice told me she retired but she was only late thirties I would guess so I'm dubious that she did. She just had a kid two years ago. My doc knew I shot though. I asked her to check my lead levels, she asked if I was eating paint chips I said I shoot a lot indoors. ETA: I have DRILLED it into my kids that if the doc or anyone at school EVER asks this question they are to say nooooooooo. |

My doc absolutely hates Obama. His staff voted for him and the doc told them they could kiss their raises goodbye.

Soooo . . . considering that doctors are now defacto government employees . . . is lying about guns a federal crime (potentially)?
