My wife says I am reading too much into the commercial.
I see "Blonde, light skinned Scandinavian woman marries dark skinned, bearded Islamic man and leads a life of wealth and happiness". So am I a racist for seeing the commercial in this light? |
No you're just a bored over thinking conservative who politicizes everything
I always thought this commercial was Volvo, but it's Volkswagen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnL-7x4n4d8
Luckily I cut the cord and watch everything streaming so I never have to see commercials anymore.
Try it, you'll find less things to get butt hurt about. |
I don't think you're reading too much into it. They didn't randomly just throw any people into the commercial. Is there an agenda? Maybe, maybe not but the people in the commercial were chosen deliberately.

Well, once burned twice shy. I don't care what they are trying to say I'll never own another Volvo again.
Or a Cadillac, or Nikes......I could go on. Everything has an agenda now. Good to know who the bad guys are. |
Sure they were picked intentionally. I don't see it as Scandinavian/Muslim though- where's her hijab?
It's a beautiful well crafted spot. I generally don't get into stories in commercials, since I know they're specifically concepted and written to make you do or feel something the advertisers want you to do or feel. Being in the industry, I'm usually pretty resistant to it. Yet this spot piques my curiosity. It's good work. |
The ads are confusing at best mostly because they are snippets cut from a longer, 3 minute ad that tells the story of a father preparing his speech for his daughters wedding. In the process he reflects on the challenges in his own marriage. The full spot makes more sense.
You can view the full spot at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Q0ePBvH18c (Can someone embed?) Bottom line is the bearded guy is the Dad, the woman driving his wife, the young man with the camera sitting in the passenger seat is one of the groomsmen and the boy in the back with the father is the son of the Mom and Dad. Conjecture is that the Mom is driving because Dad had a few drinks at the wedding. ETA: While it portray's what appears to a northeast liberal family, I don't see an agenda. I see a dad who is melancholy over giving away his daughter at her wedding. |
What about the Cadillac commercial with the black pimp and his asian girl?
Stupid commercial. I don't want to think about commercials. If i want a soap opera I'll watch Lifetime.
Yup, plenty of commercials these days are selling more than the product.
I was lost at having the wife drive while the husband sat in the back seat.
Beard guy is the father of the bride. They expect you to go to youboob and watch a five minute dramamercial.
I just thought, "damn, that doesn't make any sense, guess it's BMW for me".
When I was taking a Marketing course in college (many, many years ago) we had to sit through a series of classic commercials to which some shrill-voiced, dyke would tell us were "racist" "sexist" or otherwise offensive. I came away from that exercise realizing that you can find anything you want to see...if you look hard enough.
Culture is in constant change. The demographic of the economy changes too. Advertising is like a selfie taken in society's mirror. |

AN AGENDA, not "a agenda"

I just assumed that a young couple was getting married, and the most interesting man in the world showed up and stole the woman and is going to take her home and fuck her while she makes that loser ex fiancé watch.

That is why I drive pickup trucks or corvettes.
No feel-good bullshit . |

FYI, not all commercials are representations of the company. My marketing team packs their own agenda in with out the consent of the board.
My marketing team is the definition of gun grabbing soccer mom socialists, but most of the company doesn't nessisarily lean that way, nor do they really politicize everything, so they just accept it as trendy or modern. I swear the most rabid leftists purposely get into marketing and advertising just to push an agendas. |

There's definitely an agenda. It's to get people to buy Volvos. Now, people on a gun website are talking about Volvos, and I now know there's some long-ass YouTube video about the commercial. Looks like Volvo nailed it.

No worse then the fact that every TV show has a LGTBQ character even though they only make up less than 5% of society they are supposed to be mimicking.
We are conditioned to not care for the most part. I know I don't care. I don't know if that's because I never cared (my family never made an issue of it one way or the other) or if its because I am conditioned to not care. |

They should've put the most interesting man in the world in the back seat instead. I hear he's looking for work.

i thought white women banging old man's son and thinking about a 3-some with him.

Are we really having a thread about interracial relationships in commercials?
No, you are absolutely not reading into it, you are not racist. There is a very obvious anti-white/male agenda, the people who make these commercials admit to it. You should be glad that you are not a highly manipulated drone that can see the bullshit. Every other commercial is anti-white male. Virtually every commercial, T.V series and even in movies now, white males are almost always portrayed as stupid, weak and not masculine, at the same time they will portray black men as being smart, strong, hip and more masculine. They will show a white woman in a interracial relationship and at the same time show a white male as being weak and stupid. The only commercial i have seen lately that portrays a white man as being strong, smart, masculine and a hero is the Honda generator commercial. |
