so IN!
After daily following last years thread, I was starting to have the shakes from the summer break . |

Awesome.
I am not too far away from the Simthsonian's Udvar-Hazy facility, where they have the Discovery displayed - so if you need any photos at some point, I can run out there and take some for you. ... however, at the risk of being a wet blanket, I am against the idea of sneaking a "door gunner" into the model. I've got no problem with the fictitious satellite, but I think the door gunner undermines a really cool and serious project. Just my opinion - worth what you paid for it. |

While everyone can appreciate the inclusion of a Reagan quote (especially in a Cold War themed project), it's worth noting that the author of the quote was actually an American pilot flying for the RCAF in England during the early days of WW2.
John Gillespie Magee - High Flight "Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. "Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle, flew; and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God." Looking forward to following another fantastic project; this year's class has quite a challenge to match or surpass last year's (both the U-boot and bear). |

Initial calculations for getting the fusalage through the doorway come out to:
Fusalage width= 2.5' Wingspan= 11' Total Length=16.875' Height= 6.56' Roughly 1/12th scale |

We will give credit where it is due. I'd like to have some of Reagan's speech painted on the wall. We may have to somehow include the original too. |

I can see having kids cut out all those tiles and gluing them on top of the skin to get the right look. That starts to bring flashbacks of rivets..... |

Quoted: I know there will be some push-back on using a fictitious satellite, when there are so many great real examples out there, but I like the History that we are reminded of, with a Soviet era Doomsday "Star Wars" device. Growing up, Cold War missile systems in space were all over the news. I also like tying in popular culture, with movies like "Space Cowboys". I love the post-cold war story line, the selling of technology, and Russian untruths. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: In! Great job Guns! Why not a model of the Hubble instead of Icon? The Hubble has been the single greatest tool in space exploration since Apollo. Eta: fixed spelling. I have a good friend who is very good at building scale space shuttles. He has lots of documentation. I live close to NASA JSC, there they have a rocket park. I can get some pretty detailed pictures of the dismounted shuttle engines if you would like. They have a few sitting around.

Which shuttle name are you using or are you naming the shuttle after the school?
|
|
Houston approves
Looking forward to get, another amazing piece of work |
|
I am in! Let me know when I can start ordering my next T shirt!!!
|
|
This is as usual going to be amazing Guns! Can't wait to watch the progress!

Over on Grabcad, someone has published all the tile Outer Mold Line points for the exterior of the shuttle. they've also done renderings of the point cloud. the account for grabcad is free, or I can download the files and send them over if you like, just let me know
ETA: Also, nasa has fantastic educational outreach and would probably love a project like this and be willing to chase down drawings and other materials to make life easier |

Maybe make a magnetic door gunner you can stick on the side for the lolz... but not permanently affect the full model? |

Sweet. Another big project to mock my lack of artistic ability!!!
ETA: To anyone who didn't check out the final display of the U-boat project, you owe it to yourself to check out page 56 of the last thread. |

There may need to be more than one design. Also, I was just talking with the textiles teacher. She really seems to like this idea, and I talked to her about making Mission Patches. She thinks their embroidery machine will do this, complete with velcro on the back. |

View Quote Could place the door gunner patch on one of the flight suits if they make figures to go along with the shuttle. or make a piece of cargo stating door gunner module. He has some wiggle room. |
