A "safety inspection"? If the boat owner shows that they have the required safety equipment, they should not be searching the boat without a fucking warrant. But even "safety checks" are unconstitutional, IMO.  No probable cause, get the fuck off my boat.

If you sail on a boat, you don't have the rights you have on land.  Even IF the boat is your home, and you're at a dock.  The CG doesn't need a warrant, or reasonable suspicion.  They can board and search you for no reason at all, and do it all the time.

Hell, they openingly go fishing trying to find something.  Traveling with firearms is problematic.  If you admit you have them you're in trouble.  If you don't admit you have them, and they find them, you are in HUGE trouble.

They'll board you, and take lab samples from your hands and skins for analysis, forcing you to wait for the results, to see if you've handled any illegal drugs.  People don't understand the power the CG has.

No. They are federal law enforcement on the ocean. If they are calling state authorities over state violations, then they, indeed are enforcing state laws.

I guess FOPA doesn't apply to NY.

The CG has absolute (unconstitutional) authority to board and search vessels without needing probable cause. They can enforce federal laws and call in the locals to enforce local law.

I'm not sure why this guy didn't just go around Long Island he could have avoided the east river and NYC.

But I'm glad they arrested this obviously violent criminal, now the water ways will remain safe.

He probably wanted to dock at NYC, that is what yachts do. Some Russian oligarch made the news a few years ago when he docked for a few weeks with surface to air missiles.
