I was never been into revolvers, just didn't see the appeal.
A friend let me shoot his Colt Python with a 3 inch barrel. I cannot even describe how much I loved it. Now I want a one of my own but they're out of my price range at the moment! Is there any similar .357 at a more reasonable price or should I just save my money for a Python? |
|
Korth has a terrific trigger pull too, but they accomplish it via a roller bearing.
|

I like my 686. I'd be surprised if a python was that much better as this revolver is a dream to shoot.

Factory custom GP100 is pretty damn nice, and probably in your price range. It will also outlive cockroaches.
|
|
Go shoot a 625 with a 5 inch barrel or a model 19 loaded with 38's.

I grew up shooting my dad's Pythons, so I thought that was just how revolvers were. Then I got older and shot some other brands, and learned that they need a lot of work to even come close to the smooth trigger of the Python (and still won't match it). But that is an option, if you don't have a ton of cash: buy whatever S&W you like, and take it to a trusted gunsmith. It still won't be as pretty as the Python, but it will shoot well.

Shoot it back-to-back with your Smith, so you really notice the difference. They are works of art, not just revolvers. |

I love my 686, seriously love it.
But a friend of a friend let me shoot his 6" Python a few years ago and I have to say it's the most incredible DA trigger I've ever felt. And a beautiful revolver. |

Does that bill of sale say 1969?
Has it ever been fired? I have a raging jealousy boner right now. |

They're nice. Even came close to owning one or two. Just couldn't justify it for the $.

For years I thought, "one of theses days I'm gonna pick up a double action revolver."
Then I got a Ruger Match Champion. Now I'm hunting for a Manhurin. |

Damn it. Sounds like I'll be saving my money for a while.
Thanks for the input, guys! |

What first made you aware, made you want a Python?
For me it Starsky & Hutch. That sweet stainless 6" that Hutch carried in a shoulder rig. |

Early Dan Wesson's* are nice. But seriously there is no substitute for the Python series.

View Quote The pre-MKIII 1953-mid-1969ish Colt Troopers shared the same lockwork as the Python and can be had for much less. Still not the work of art in all respects that the Python was. But it'll give you a taste of the good life at a reasonable buy in. Of course a pre-lock S&W 586/686 is an excellent choice and as I stated before, an excellent value for a workhorse wheelgun. |

"GD I want to get a watch for under $300" "Rolex, maybe a pre-owned omega if you want to save a couple bucks" Serious question, does anyone import Korth revolvers into this country? I seem to recall announcements at the last SHOT show and at many SHOT shows before that. But I have never seen one for sale anywhere. |

I'll look into the Trooper and Diamondback, plus the 686 and other S&Ws.
Somehow I doubt I'll stop with just one. I still have time! |

The next best factory trigger I've found are on the CZ-75A. Both the DA and the SA are almost as smooth as the Python's. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

LOL....the cylinder turns the wrong way.
S&W all the way. Except, for the Colt SAA. Aloha, Mark |

Six inch Python is best Python.
I shot one that my cousin had. Then he sold it to make a down payment on a pickup (when Pythons were still in production). Years ago, I was looking at six inch .22 Diamondbacks at a gun show. Only $350, but money was just too tight at that point. Next time I thought to look for them at a gun show, the prices were ridiculous. |

I have an old, beat to hell .44 smith mountain gun that has about the smoothest DA and SA trigger I have ever felt. I swear you can feel every component moving into place but it doesn't interfere with the with pull at all. You can stage it easily (even for a .44). SA breaks like the proverbial glass rod we have all read about.
|

And Starsky carried a S&W Model 39. Which I also wanted. But my best friends older brother had a 39 that we were able to shoot with. Beautiful pistol but it wouldn't run a full mag of ball ammo without a FTE, stovepipes mostly.
