I recently bought a used car. When I got it home, I changed all the fluids and checked the spare tire. It was down to 7 psi. I am not sure if the previous owner ever checked it. I generally check mine ever year or two, and they always need 5-10 psi added. Do you check yours?

I don't. It looks full and feels full. I carry a large compressor with me.

About every other tire rotation or before a long car trip if it's been a while.  I usually have to add a few pounds.  I also carry a compressor in all my vehicles.  it saved my ass once when I had a flat, and the spare was low.

Mine gets checked along with the other 4, it helps that it's attached to the back of the vehicle though, I don't have to dig into the trunk or get under the car to check it.

One of my cars has a compact spare. I carry a compressor and a tire plug kit in that car. I would rather plug a nail hole on the side of the road than drive with the compact spare.

The little donut tires don't hold air long and are usually a hassle to access for filling.  So it's good idea to keep a 12v air pump in the vehicle, even for full sized spares and whenever you have a leak.

For full sized spares I usually top them off when I top off the tires.

Got that beat.  Bought a used truck earlier this year.  The spare didn't have a valve core in the stem.  After I put in a spare core had it seems to be holding air fine.

That's interesting.  On my Honda they specifically say not to use a spare that has pressure monitoring in it.  If you get a take-off wheel/tire to use as a full-size spare you are supposed to have the sensor removed or it will screw up the system since it is looking for four signals and actually finds five.

I check the pressure at every oil change.  That usually works out to about every six months.  The temporary spares usually are down 5 - 10 PSI at that point.

I used to never check the spare, until I had a flat 25 miles up a dirt road, and another 45 miles on pavement to the nearest service station, with a donut spare with about 15 psi in it.  Now the spares get checked annually, and I don't go far off road without a jump pack pump, a manual pump, a patch kit, a ratchet strap, and some fix-a-flat.

I usually take a road trip once a year and I go to Discount tire and have them rotate and check pressure in all tires including the spare.

Thanks for the reminder, OP.  Will check all the cars when I get home this evening!

I try to watch my diet and exercise regularly so that I don't get a spare tire (BMI < 25).  But if I had a spare tire, I'd treat it as another room in the temple that is my body.

This.  I should probably do it more often, but it's not something I think about.  It's been 12-15 years since I had to use a spare tire.

Now that I post this, I'll probably have a flat within 48 hours...

I've never checked it, because I know there is no air in it.... because my vehicle has on board air.

Just recently I made a remote fill valve so I can easily check/add pressure without crawling underneath. Just kneel by the rear bumper to access.

I did this because I got sick of the spare taking up my box. I had it in the box because otherwise I would never check the pressure.

I checked and rechecked my tires until I was crazy,,and the light still would not go off. Then as i was reading the owners manual to see how to reset the light,  I remembered the spare,,,it was low.
