Took my wife and son to Waffle House for supper. Went in, the place was clean, the food was good, the waitresses were cute.
After sitting for a half a minute, ONE HALF OF A WHOLE MINUTE, our waitress came up and took our drink order. Drinks were served quickly. There were two other groups in the place, both looked like they came from the motel next door. They were quiet and pleasant. One lady came in and the waitress gave her a bag of ice. Food was good! My wife loves their grits & sausage! My son and I had burgers. The coffee (decaf for both of us) was good and the waitress even brewed a pot just for us and kept our mugs full. So my question is, WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED? I bladed upon entering the door, I kept sweeping the room with my eyes for trouble. I looked to see if there were cops in the corner, and there wasn't one to be seen! The closest thing I saw to a crack addict was in the wall of the bathroom (which was clean). What did I do wrong? |

You weren't east of the Mississippi River and south of the Ohio River.
Waffle Houses there are a totally different animal. |

Was this between the hours of 2 and 5 on the weekend? If not you missed out.

I ate at the one on Dauphin and I-65 in Mobile a week ago.
The waffle was a goopy mess, the scrambled eggs were soggy and cold, and the sausage was crunchy. |

There's one at each exit on I-55 around here.
I love the place. |

College students and drunks are Nocturnal.
Cops between shifts are Crepuscular (most active dawn and dusk). Most regular folks are Diurnal. The same Waffle House at 3:30AM could be a vomitorium of college kids, worn out prostitutes and methmouthed gutter trash. |

The reputation WH gets from drunken debauchery is well deserved, and encountering said drunks is probably all about timing. Try 0200-0300 on a weekend to see that side of it.
WH otherwise is a typical short order griddle cooked 'Murican staple restaurant. The food is good, relatively cheap, and consistently the same no matter what WH you find yourself in. |

Scrambled eggs and cheese, bacon, hash browns with onions and a waffle on the side.

I've been eating at WH for years. Never had a bad meal that I remember.

I definitely have a soft spot for Waffle House. I've never had a bad experience there, and the T-bone steak dinner deal for $12 is fantastic for nights when I work late. The breakfast deal for $7 is almost more than I can eat and plenty enjoyable as well.

There was a WH across the parking lot from the Platinum Club in Columbus, GA. Always fun at 0 dark 30.

My mom and I went to one in GA a few years ago. Our waitress quit mid shift.

There are good ones, there are bad ones. I used to avoid them all after Midnight.

WHAT'S THIS FLY DOING IN MY SOUP??" "Back stroke, prob'ly..." "WAITRESS!! THIS COFFEE TASTES LIKE MUD!" "Well, it was ground this morning..." |

Years ago I stopped in at a Dunkin Donuts in Albuquerque. As much as I love donuts, it's the only donut I ever took one bite out of and threw out. It was chocolate covered, but tasted like it had absolutely no sugar in it. A few days later I read a father and son went in there early in the morning, and the son was shot in the cross fire between two gang members.

There are good ones, there are bad ones. View Quote There's a huge difference in the two just in my town. The one in the center of town is about as nice as a Waffle House can be, the one on the edge of town by the interstate is a shitshow. I took my buddy from NY to the crappier one when he came to visit me because he wanted to see a WH that lived up to the stereotype. He was not disappointed. |

Never been to one, but you might want to try a WH that's closer to the trailer park.
This thread reminds me of hearing some years back about Kid Rock getting arrested for a fight at a Waffle House. He later on said that getting arrested for fighting at a Waffle House is about as white trash as you can get. |

It was 50/50 for the six that were near me as well. A mix of Buckhead frat and aspiring rappers. The IHOP that used to be on Peachtree was much worse though. Good entertainment regardless. |

Probably because this guy, a man I knew well, is gone.

Similar experience last week. Buddy and I stopped at the WH in Bedford, TX (right next to the-perpetually-under-construction 114). It was clean, the other patrons were quiet. The staff repeatedly filled my tea glass.
I had smothered and topped hash browns (way too much...) scrambled eggs and sausage patties. Total bill was just over $20. Renewed my faith in 'Murica. TC |
