We're you mowing a field?
Had 2 different friends mowing last week and one of them said the hawks were feasting on the rats running from the tractor. The other said the Mexican Eagles were eating baby rabbits.

OPOSSUMS: THE UNSUNG HEROES AGAINST LYME DISEASE AND OTHER TICK-BORNE DISEASES

DAWN PAPPLE
</header>

Several states in the U.S. are reporting record populations of ticks and increasing tick-borne disease transmission, like Lyme disease, but clearing your yard of these blood suckers might be only one opossum away. Yes, that giant rat-looking animal that plays dead when threatened and hisses like the devil’s spawn when scared is actually extremely beneficial to humans and other mammals. Opossums’ diets include snakes, snails, slugs, mice, rats, and carrion. Perhaps the most intriguing item on an opossum’s daily menu is an even more dreaded human foe: the tick. Opossums’ voracious appetite for ticks can nearly obliterate a tick population.

Scientist Rick Ostfeld points out that few ticks survive a run in with an opossum. These animals, often called filthy, are actually remarkable groomers and spend almost all of their free time grooming themselves. Ticks are attracted to these mammals, but most of them never survive on an opossum’s body long enough to taste a single drop of blood.

"So these opossums are walking around the forest floor, hoovering up ticks right and left,” Ostfeld explained, "killing over 90% of these things, and so they are really protecting our health.”

Michigan State University entomologist Howard Russell told the <em style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Detroit Free Press[/span] that the tick population is increasing. Russell says that both male and female ticks feed on blood and these thirsty bloodsuckers can transmit diseases like Lyme and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

At least until they play "dead".

College roommate saw a opossum crossing the road and nearly crashed pulling to the shoulder.  Got out and kicked the bastard until he tapped out.  Took it back to college and put it in the trash can in front of one of the girl's dorms.  Once it "came alive", hilarity ensued.   Or is that Hillary ensured?  Same difference.  Both blonde and gross to look at.

It would essentially be the same as keeping a pet bat.  My kids and wife would freak out over a pet possum

They are pretty easy to raise at that age. Get some yogurt, meal worms, decent dog kibble, fruits, veggies, anything like that. Oh yeah, water, can't forget that.  If they won't eat at first, you can get KMR (kitten replacement milk) from a pet store and feed them with a eye dropper or syringe.

They can be quite entertaining.

I have seen some people keep them as pets for some reason. They would come up to you and tended to hang around the yard. As long as they don't tear anything up I guess they are beneficial.

The one I remember was named Speedbump.

I got a kick out of this. FYI Austria has no marsupials, and 'possums are from South America. See "Great American Interchange" ~3mya after the isthmus of Panama formed.

Um, sorry to burst bubbles, but....

Opossums carry diseases such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis, relapsing fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis, coccidiosis, trichomoniasis, and Chagas disease. They may also be infested with fleas, ticks, mites, and lice. Opossums are hosts for cat and dog fleas, especially in urban environments.
