http://www.theindychannel.com/news/local-news/call-6-carrier-said-it-might-stay-if-workers-cut-their-pay-to-585-an-hour

Call 6 Investigates found out that during those talks Carrier apparently told the union they could possibly stay if the workers agreed to cut their pay from about $23 an hour to $5.85 an hour.
Carrier is supposed to save about $65 million a year when it moves to Mexico in 2017.

Any wage is fine as long as both parties agree to it in my opinion, the whole idea of a forced minimum wage is BS.

And then wages still kill their product, their AC units run 40-70% more then your wonderfully built Chinese piece of shit and they can no longer compete selling here or anywhere else.  And Americans buy the cheap piece of crap Chinese units because, hey, it's cheaper.  And then Carrier goes out of business.

Americans, our own worst enemies.

If the only way your company can remain profitable is to pay your workers $5.85/hr, then maybe it's time to reexamine your shitty business model.

You should read the story. The statement from Carrier addresses the $5.85 claim as impossible.  It's the union manipulating things.

There shouldnt be any minimum wage.  If the market commands a certain hourly wage then it's capitalism.  Look at singapore - they dont have a minmum wage.  All their service sector McJobs consist of elderly and teens.  Able bodied adults have to work on their skills and get a job that supports their families.  None of this lazy FSA work 20 hours a week and get gov aid BS

I agree.  A min. wage tells the business what it has to pay you not what the market should pay you.

Get rid of min. wage and see how many jobs offer more money because they have to in order to employ people.

Yes.  Liberals cry you can't support a family of four on minimum wage.

NO SHIT  Only old people and teenagers have those jobs.  If you started a family and are pushing 30 and making minimum wage, is it the company's obligation to support you with a commensurate wage?  No, shit for brains, it's yours.  What are you doing making minimum wage when you're 30?  What are you doing having children you know you can't support?

Not sure where the truth begins in this matter, but if you read down into the article, Carrier's spokesperson claims they never made such an offer. According to Carrier, the only mention of the wage comparison was meant to demonstrate to the union that there was no concessions they could possibly make that would alter Carrier's intention to relocate -- it's been resolved.

No, I'm not taking Carrier's side, or saying either party is right or wrong here.

Is Carrier being puron on their commitment?

Yep. The union wanted to know what it would take for them to stay. The company said it.

Perhaps their business model has become shitty due to government's over regulation of everything.  I wonder what payroll taxes the company pays for their $23/hour workers....

I'd guess the union, it was probably said in response to a question like "is there NO possible way to keep the place here in Indiana?", " yeah, at $5.85/HR maybe... "

"We are disappointed the union has apparently chosen to negotiate through the media, rather than engage in productive discussions with us. The company never suggested our employees should work for $5.85. The union was told that to achieve the $65 million in annual savings resulting from the relocation, the average hourly wage rate would need to be $5.85 per hour. That is not possible and shows why the company believes the union cannot offer concessions sufficient to change the company's intent to relocate. That’s why it’s time for the union to return to the table to talk about what’s important now, reaching an agreement that provides clarity and certainty for our employees during the transition."

Is that what happened?

Isn't it just as likely that the company told the workers, hey, here's the equivalent cost point. See? This doesn't work here.
