This game is really old. Like just before AOL old. It was very similar to command and conquer where you had to build up an army using tanks ships and planes. The map was mostly hidden and you had to use your characters to explore it. Obviously being so old the graphics suck but I have been looking for this game for years wanting to relive a bit of my childhood. So does anybody remember this game?

You're talking about a whole genre of real time strategy games. What thematic elements did it have? Modern warfare? Sci Fi? Fantasy?
ETA: Kinda sounds like Civilization. |

Sounds like Starcraft but that's probably too easy
I remember Microsoft had a WWII combat strategy game in the mid 90s that was very similar to Starcraft and C&C |
|
X-Com UFO Defense was like that... probably not what you're looking for as it didn't have tanks and all that.

Probably some version of Command and Conquer where the C&C logo was not as prominent as the game version..
Red Alert or Tiberian Sun maybe. You honestly couldn't have been much more vague about the game. |

I used to love PC game called Lords of Conquest that was along those lines.

I don't know if this will help or not but I remember that in order to actually play the game I had to enter a word based off of a number that they gave me which would correspond to a list that I had on paper.

Sounds like the original Empire. Also played a version on the Mac called Strategic Conquest.

Also it was a top down view, and turn based. It wasn't fantasy either. Tanks had one turn, planes had like 5.

Command HQ for the win!
I still play this game to this day. Great game. Quoted:

I believe the game OP is talking about is a DOS based game. I remember playing one on a Digital Equipment (DEA) machine, in their version of basic which was compiled on this specific machine. This was definitely a black and white screen with NO graphics. Played in 86 to 88, we are talking early pentium chip days, maybe a 286 machine. You started with a town and you had to build your army, move out in different directions and take another city to build aircraft, move and find and conquer another town to build tanks, move and find a port city and build aircraft carriers. And so on until you defeated the world. Kind of like an early computerized game of RISK. You were playing against the computer and it used a lot of random number generators to determine who one the battles.

What was the old one where you had 2 Apes standing on opposing sides of a cityscape taking turns throwing bananas at each other and you had to enter the angle and power to compensate for "wind" that changed every turn and the bananas would leave craters in the buildings if they missed. Me and my brother played the crap out of that game.
