I went to the Gun Show in Philly this weekend- saw a built BM59 on a Springfield receiver (I'm assuming it was a Garand receiver). I looked at it but didn't pick it up and have a good going-over. It was priced at $1459. When I came back to the table an hour later it was gone.

What kind of groupings are you guys getting from these rifles?
Are you shooting with them or, are they just vault queens? |

Did you buy a new one, or just refinish the one from the kit? I finished it. When I received my kit I thought the stock was hopeless. I sweated a lot of the old oil and used acetone and chalk to pull any remaining oil out. Then it got 7-8 coats of tung oil. It's not perfect but I like it. |

I sighted it in at 25 yards and was holding a 3 MOA group at 100 yards with ZQI 7.62 NATO ball ammo, which is typically 3 MOA ammo. I was very pleased with the performance of the rifle, and I'm sure I can do better with handloads. |

Bumpity bump to see if there are any other finished rifles (besides NukeFromOrbit's lovely offerings)...

I guess in theory if you had the receiver from an old imported BM59 sporter that would work, too. That's pretty unlikely tho, I think. |

And Tim Shufflin's fee to covert a Garand receiver and build a BM59 is about $650. So right there it will cost you $1000 plus the cost of your parts kit. Part of the allure of the BM59 is the forged receiver combined with all that Italian style. You can't use a cast receiver. Most cast Garand receivers are junk. Look at it this way, if you spend $1400 or so, you will have a magazine fed 308 Garand that will be much better than any Springfield M1A. |

There will be an article on building the BM59 in issue No. 21 of Firearms News. Gus Norcross got one of the Sarco kits and built it on a Foster receiver. It'll be on newsstands in about three weeks.
Here's an excerpt that talks about the modifications to the original Garands. 1.Extensive milling of the original receiver to accept a box magazine. 2.Opening up the floorplate of the original trigger housing for the magazine, fitting an M14 style magazine catch and installing a winter trigger. 3.Machining the bolt to clear the magazine feed lips. 4.Installation of a new 7.62 NATO barrel, 19.3” in length. 5.A select fire mechanism allowing semi-auto or full auto firing by rotating a selector switch. 6.Modifying the stock to accept the magazine and select fire mechanism. 7.A new gas cylinder and plug. 8.The tri-compensator muzzle device. 9.A stripper clip guide fixed to the receiver bridge for topping off the magazine while it is still in the rifle. 10. A shorter operating rod and spring along with a new full length spring guide. 11. Replacing the original steel butt plate with a rubber pad. 12. Fitting a new bolt stop activated by the magazine. 13. A folding bipod mounted to the gas cylinder. 14. A folding grenade launcher sight mounted to the gas cylinder. Best, David |

Got mine in this afternoon. Pretty fast turnaround time!
I'll take a couple of pictures this evening so you can see it pre-refinished wood. Then take it apart and apply some boiled linseed oil or something to the wood. |

Tung, BLO, or Teak oil. Teak oil looks good, but obviously not what they used.

I really don't know what to finish the stock with. View Quote That's a nice birch stock set! The darker, splotchy areas on the stock are soaked-in Cosmoline or oil. Wipe the stock down with acetone, repeating as needed, until they lighten up. Then, go buy some Tom's 1/3 Pine Tar mix, and apply as instructed. The 1/3 Pine Tar mix contains pine tar, boiled linseed oil, and beeswax. It will penetrate the pores in the birch and add some nice color to the grain. Apply two or three coats with a day or two between each, and you'll love the way the stock looks. |

This is after I scraped the original finish off with a knife blade and spent about a week sanding and steaming. Here it is originally. The dark splotches are from grease/oil in handling. I shipped the stock with my parts kit to Shuff's parkerizing. They'll come out with very light sanding. |

I'd like to try to replicate NATO 147gr load with ramshot tac and these surplus GD 147 gr I have. Not sure what's absolutely safe tho, given the Garand op rod issues.
This thread seems to indicate something like 41 or 42 gr of TAC would be a good start load. https://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=6&f=42&t=302244 400 processed cases in the wet tumbler now. I'll do a few loads and take my chrono out tomorrow and give ya'll some exact data with this gun if that helps. Mine has the SARCO new production barrel. Dunno if that makes a difference, but it's supposed to have a gas port drilled something like .078, which I think Tim Shufflin thinks is probably a little too large. I will probably go with an aftermarket, adjustable gas plug in the near future. On the stock refinish, doing some test pieces of walnut right now. Right now it's kind of a tossup between Watco Teak Oil Finish and the Minwax Tung Oil Finish. I think I like Watco better, honestly. It's a hair darker than the Minxwax and has a very slight red tint to it. |

I think what the manufacturer of the sarco barrels might have done was make a reproduction BM59 barrel with the gas port drilled as if it were a 308 Garand. But the BM59 has a different barrel length and the tri-comp on the end, so it's probably not perfectly the same as far as gas goes. To be on the safe side, I'll probably get a schuster gas plug for it, make NATO replica loads, then adjust the plug until it will cycle with them. |
