Ill update this as I can but I at least wanted to do the introduction post. In a few weeks I am driving to OKLAHOMA to among other things restore a Post Sample MAG 58 with Rhodesian heritage. The guys in the shop who are also friends of mine asked me to restore this to it's original camoed glory. I have a spot on replica paint which I have been selling Rhodie paint kits for quite some time so I am confident the end result will look pretty awesome.....OH! The best part is I get to shoot it afterwards.

For now just a teaser pic of how it currently sits.

UPDATE.

DAY ONE - Painted the Yellow undercoat. Notice the original paint is left alone.

DAY TWO - Green coat.

DAY THREE - DISTRESSING

VIDEO of me shooting the beast :)

They've asked me to.

The funny thing is they tried to strip it but noticed the paint was pretty damn tough....So they have left it. The idea is to blend and distress the new paint to the old.....I can accomplish it no worries :D

Some did, some didn't.

As far as the look of the gun I've developed a pretty good blending pattern based on photos I've seen of various Rhodie FN rifles etc how the paint wears .

Also spoken with various vets. The barrels were painted and the paint wore away with usage. The paint they used seems to be lead based paint which would make sense due to the age but the oil based paint I use matches well on texture and look . I matched the yellow and green from a stock set I had and believe me it was trial and error to get it right.

This is true but there is also such a thing as restoration. The gun was built off a kit it's no longer 100% original and it hasn't been original since it became a kit.

I've been in contact with various Rhodesian bush war vets as well to get an idea on how to do this right.

Peter Baxter Paint them all camo--no black--makes it uncool

Phil Nel barrel as well..

Harry Hayden-Payne Paint got burnt off barrels after extensive use.

Walter Graeme Daniell That MAG will look good woth a wooden stock...

Nicholas Skipworth-Michell Spare barrels were carried to replace bent ones from excessive firing. they usually were'nt cammoed.

Gary Arnold The barrels were also painted

· Reply · Yesterday at 2:11am

Original blued with wooden butt looks good if you only want it for display. smile emoticon

Mark de Buys Whole MAG was painted, except obviously feed tray.

· Reply · Yesterday at 9:08am

Geoffrey Yates Out of curiosity; Where did you scare up the MAG?

Russell Haydon Fulton Everything painted except the fore and rear sights, the gas regulator, trigger and feed tray. That's my recollection anyway wink emoticon

Chris Jones The barrel paint burned off pretty quick. lol
