The U.S. attorney’s office is seeking 96 months in custody, three years
of supervised release and a $25,000 fine for former California Sen.
Leland Yee, who pleaded guilty last July to one count of felony racketeering.

That's it?  Fuck that guy.  How many years would I have been hit with if I'd been doing similar levels of arms trafficking?

Seems to me like the fine should exceed the profits from the crime.  Or is that forfeited separately?

Yeah, 8yrs and $25K for trafficking in machineguns and missiles - pretty much IS a slap on the wrist, especially since he'll go to Club Fed instead of PMITAFP.

There are some judges who would look at this joke of a plea deal and seeing how old Leland was a government official at the time would toss the agreement and impose the maximum penalty. I would imagine that this deal will not be presented before such a judge.

Because gun charges are the first thing to do in the negotiations. I believe that I discussed this in the leniency for scumbags threads. Lots of guys in jail for non-violent drug crimes, because all the weapons charges and resisting arrest charges were dropped in plea negotiations.

Probably about the same.

Long prison terms in legislation that sounds great in the press have little to do with actions actually taken by prosecutors and courts. I'll be surprised if he actually spends eight years in prison. The typical murderer is out in seven and a half.

That said, as a legislator, he should spend the rest of his life in a cage and they should dump his ashes down the prison toilet after he croaks. There can be no "tolerance" for government agents who use their offices to commit crime. There needs to be a much higher standard for people who want to play government. The lack of it continues to produce thieves and liars like Yee.

I'm just a simpleton, but it seems to me that in a fair and just world, those who are granted authority over people should be punished more severely for abusing that authority.  I dunno, maybe this is a harsh punishment for racketeering, but it doesn't sound like that to me.

So a guns and weapons dealer who was an elected politician will do less time than Duke Cunningham did for bribery and tax fraud? Well isn't that just swell.
