Must be bolt action, so straight pulls, etc., are okay.  (ETA everybody else you may encounter has the same limitation)

Will have to cover all your potential needs, defense, hunting, etc.  Robust enough to gamble on no spare parts being available.  Accurate enough to hit targets at whatever distances may prove necessary.

You will have an ample supply of ammunition, whatever the choice.

If the gun has multiple available calibers, please specify what caliber. You will be limited accordingly.

My choice?

For picking over the bones? I'll take a TC Dimention in .223 with the scope mount on the barrel. I plan on hiding it before needing it.

Otherwise, a Schmidt-Rubin K31.

I love Remington 700's...but I would go for the one I do not have yet...a Remington Model 7 in .308.  Light, short, accurate.

My fave Remington in the stable now is a 700V built on a Accuracy International AICS 1.5 stock.  Amazing rifle.  Next up is two Remington 700 Classics...one in .300 Win Mag, the other in 6.5x55mm Swedish.

Remington made a great rifle

Leupolds MK4 4x14x40, weights 1lb, it's one my favorite scopes. If they would stop this mixed MOA/MIL bullshit and go all MIL or all MOA from the factory they would be perfect.

ETA: misread, night force one piece mount

This is actually the correct technical answer, however;

I would go with a Pre-64 Winchester Supergrade in 300 H&H which is kind of my grail gun.

No1 Mk III* (No4 does have far superior sights I just don't own any).....I have a small collection, my rescued 1913 has fully adjustable sights and is accurate to 8" pumpkin to 220yrds.

My k31 is a better rifle in many regards but just doesn't have the ergonomics for closer ranges.   the Indian NATO version would be better in a shtf scenario just because of the scarcity of 303.

I've owned and shot many of the common c&r rifles.
My favorite is the m96 swede mauser in 6.5x55, though it needs mojo sights.
m39 is a close second, and Id be comfortable with most with trigger/sight mods.
The modern rifles are less attractive, but there are some good commercial 98 mauser design out there.
I like bolt guns.

Scope was free.... I traded an old blind woman a candy wrapper I found off the floor and I stole the K31 from a sleeping infant.

This right here.  I've actually held off on buying bolt-action rifles because it's so hard to find one set up with iron sights and a forward scope mount.

Finnish M39 with 4X PE scope.

Remingtons are accurate, but the bolt handle is braed on and in a life/death situation, I don't want push feed.
SMLEs are two piece stock and if scoped (like No 4T), heavy.
03A4 Springfields have the sh*tiest scope in that Weaver 330 (if the Lyman Alaskan was on it, that's better).
K98 were iffy for accuracy and it depended on getting good ammunition.
Modern service arms like the M24 or the Marine Corps rifle is too heavy (yeah, more rifle less food/water) and those stocks are like canoe paddles/boat anchors.

I should make myself a take-down Mauser 98 with interrupted threads.

This is what I have.  In hindsight a 24/47 may have been a better choice, but the m48 is robust and accurate.
