Get a cat instead. They may not like you at all, but they won't betray you like a dog will.

The look in those eyes.  That pooch is the kind that would lead a horse into dean Wormer's office and shoot it AND ENJOY IT.

Nice job OP. That dog has likely never experienced the love you showed him.

I forgot to say that at least one of his former owners abused him . If he thinks in trouble he will bolt if you try to pet him .

When we got out two latest puppies (brother and sister) I spent three months on a sleeping pad, on the floor with them so they would bond.
Got up in several times per night to let them out or clean up accidents.
Now, two years later they are firm members of the Cult of the Mommy.
When she is out of the house they will settle for me though, so there's that I guess.

Our daughters gifted my wife with a rescue dog. He is her dog when he pulls his shenanigans. He is anyone's dog who has something to eat.

He can jump high enough so his head clears the top of a kitchen counter. When we were at Christmas dinner we heard a commotion by the breakfast room table where the rest of the turkey was. Then we heard him running down the hall so we took off in pursuit and retrieved the other drumstick and thigh.

Here he is plotting his next move.

My last rescue is the same way, she was supposed to be my dog and instead decided to bond with the wife, who really isn't a "dog person" and doesn't like me.  She used to growl at me when I'd come into a room, but after I growled back at her a few times now she just runs away when I get near.  I've tried everything to make friends with her, but she's just not having it. She'll even turn her head to one side and refuse to take treats from me.

At least there's a silver lining, the wife is coming to like dogs more than she did before.
