AND....waiting for the .454 Casull guys to chime in, and set us all straight. (and yes, I have a DE in .50AE, with lots o' hoarded cartridges ) You rang http://s20.postimg.org/q062idfpp/image.jpg I have absolutely no use for one, but I would like one. |
|
Either one will do...............I have a Winchester 94AE in .357 Mag and it's a nice rifle
|
|
Given the OP's requirement of just 1, I choose the .44.
Of course in real life, I have both. |
|
44 all the way. Owned and loaded both.
fun to make super light 44 loads for zero recoil plinking but nothing beat full house 44 loads with H110 powder. Even after thousands of rounds it still impresses |
|
It depends on the intended purpose. I picked .44 simply because its more versatile, but if you're talking about a general SHTF sidearm, its hard to beat a 4-5" 7 or 8-shot .357 and belt full of speed loaders. You can load fast 110gr HPs all the way to 180-200gr hardcast bullets, and still shoot .38 Spl if needed.
Not to sell the .44 short, though, as you can load 180's all the way up to 355gr hardcast lead that will damn near penetrate anything on the North American continent. |

Voted .357.
In my younger days it would have been .44. Now I'm an old fart with neuropathy in my right hand. Can still control a .357, but a .44 with heavy loads is beyond my capabilities since I can't really tell how tight my grip is. |
|
.357. Since a hand injury .357 is at the top end of my recoil tolerance. I can load .38s as cheap as .22 and full house .357 will kill anything in Va.

When you have the choice, .44mag without a doubt. (not to cast any disparaging light on the beautiful .357mag cartridge, though) View Quote Mel Tappan said everything that there is to say about .357 mag. For the record I have both but the pistol(44) is an outsized thing in my hands. |

I don't mind my 357 magnum revolvers. I think they're a good all around gun. I'd actually prefer a 45 LC over a 44 magnum if my revolver caliber had to start with a 4

In my experience, a .357 is more compact, more accurate, and more fun to shoot.
YMMV. |

If I had the choice, I'd stick with .357.
I'd pick up a nice 4 or 5" revolver, a lever gun and a 77/357 and have the latter two threaded so I can use my Mystic X on 'em. Shoot .38SPL for fun, and hot ass .357 for hunting or whatever... get near .30-30 performance out of it. |

Contrary to popular belief you're not going to do anything with a 454 Casull you can't do with a 44 magnum. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

(and yes, I have a DE in .50AE, with lots o' hoarded cartridges ) Contrary to popular belief you're not going to do anything with a 454 Casull you can't do with a 44 magnum. The only way you have a chance there is if you load well beyond spec, and only use certain revolvers (or a rifle) that can handle those overpressure .44 loads. But just grabbing any old .44 versus a .454? No contest. And of course, as already stated, there is the whole being able to shoot a bunch of other cartridges as well. If you get a .454 cut for moonclips, you can run .454 Casull, .45 Colt, .45 S&W, or .45 ACP. |

.44 mag is perfect for anything two or four legged. 44 special is a great soft or practice load, and .44 shot shells are proven snake and varmint rounds within 8 yards. Its highly versatile. View Quote The 357 mag is for learning how to shoot. It's a trainer caliber to help prepare you to shoot the big bores. |

I voted .357 'cause .44 Mag (Model 29) is a bitch to shoot with full-power loads Yeah, I'm a wimp. I would bet 99% of .44 shooters would secretly agree with you. But most won't openly admit it because DIRTY HARRY! You're fighting it. Go with it, it's just another gun. Once you learn to shoot the big bore handguns your 357's will gather dust. Also: Reload and get proper grips on your gun. You will get there faster |

The .44 Magnum is actually useful for such things as deer hunting and protection from big animals when in the woods. The .357: not so much. |
|
|
|
I have and like both, if I could only do one though it would be a 357.
|
|
I voted 357. I do have both, but I shoot the 357 much more than I do the 44. I would love to have a S&W 44 Mountain Gun though.

44 magnum.
44 special blazer brass with gold dot hollow points for carry. Or varmints. Or whatever. 44 mag for the rest. Never been unhappy with about any 44 mag loads I bought other than when I ran some through a lever action and I guess the bullet was not made for that sort of speed cause it would not go through the 55 gallon drum that the revolver would put the exact same round right through. i recomend reloading for either one. I recomend time spent on youtube learning about wax bullets and other odds and ends some folks do with revolvers. |
|
.357 Mag. highly versatile, from .38 specials for practice and low recoil, to powerhouse loads that can do just about everything can be done with a handheld cartridge. Ammo is available, and even the most powerful loads are manageable with a little practice.

Found a nice S&W 329pd at the local gun store for a deal. Said it had less than a box of rounds through it. He recommended some 44sp rounds but hell, that's for sissies so I went will some full power 44 magnum loads.
I now know why they recommend 44sp. Took 48 rounds back home that day. |

That movie is the reason I got one,saw it and have to have one. .454s will snap your wrist but it's really not that bad. It weighs 44oz so the weight takes a lot of the recoil. .45 Colt is like shooting 9mm in it. |
