Quality(2016) versus Quantity(1986). I like it!
I think the modern military has much more actual experience in fighting, but I think the Reagan military would scrape out a win.

Conventional: 2016 all day long, pretty much every piece of gear or vehicle is better.  As far as troops, well you had fat guys floating around on ships and working in maintenance hangers back in 1986 too. Infantry and Spec Ops guys are still hard men today.  Maybe even stronger due to work out routines/science and stuff like protein shakes and all the nutritional science gained in the last 30 years.

Yes today we have less, but our less can do a lot more than in the past.  Stuff like GPS, JDAM's, Blue Force, MRAP's, PVS 14's, RCO's, Body Armor the list goes on and on

Nuclear:  1986

We had GPS not as many satellites but we had it. Tomahawks we had it, MLRS we had it, while the current tech is much better a lot of the tech you are using was first brought online during the 80's.

Obama would still be deciding where to deploy forces and which ROE we would use while our M-60's would be destroying the airfields and drone homes.

Dont forget by 86 we were starting to field the m1 abrams in numbers . It actually entered service in 1980.

Well, back in 1986 the average grunt was a semi-literate mean little fucker from a broken home with a bad drinking problem who spent his off time chasing pussy and getting in fights who was motivated by a strong sense of anger at the world and well-earned fear of his even more socially-dysfunctional NCOs.

In 2016 the average grunt is a PT-belt wearing millennial on profile for an "injury" sustained in AIT who spends his off time playing BF4 and swapping handjobs (no homo)with his roommate and is motivated by the hope that the new female infantrypersons will arrive in the spring.  Their NCOs lead them with strongly worded counseling statements and strictly-maintained online training requirements.

The poorly-maintained barely-working grunt-abused PVS-14s are much better than the poorly-maintained barely-working grunt-abused PVS-5s though, so advantage there.

The 86 bros had about twice as many divisions, so there is that.

Are you talking infantry versus infantry, or combined arms, what?

Cause I will guarantee you one thing the Armor units of 1986 were far better than any armor left in the Army today....

In 1986 we had 3 Armored Divisions, now we have one, and mainly in name only.

In 1986 19E's and K's trained hard for facing a Red onslaught streaming through the Fulda Gap...now they are for the most part glorified MP's

My old Guard unit (127th Armor) when they deployed the last few time, they had no armor with them...unless you count uparmored HUMMV's...

I'd say if you are talking Armored warfare the 1986 Army takes 2016....mainly because Armor is nowhere near the branch it used to be, since it doesn't really fit with combat action since 2001, which is all about COIN and small unit infantry/SF stuff....

IMHO

I'm sure military advances in the Air Force alone in the past 30 years would play a huge factor.

Plus we're getting out maybe 15 years of wars now in the Middle East, I wouldn't second guess our guys now even thought it's an obungo administration.

I was USMC 1977-1981. Most of the guys I worked with (airwing) were stoned most of the time. These were the Carter years-the worst in USMC history.

My Son USMC EAS'd last year.  They would kick our asses.  Fitter, smarter, better weapons-and probably not stoned.

Since I spent many hours playing Harpoon in the late 80's/early 90's, I'm curious about current/former Navy guys opinion on this:

What about 1986 carrier battle group -vs- 2016 carrier battle group?

The Surface Navy of 1986 would have been fucked by the standoff weapons of today. No open architecture AEGIS. Completely gone fucked.

The Sub Fleet of '86 didn't have any conventional cruise missles yet. Basically a non factor, plus the boats were old and loud 50's and 60's vintage.

Pretty sure we had plenty of 688's in service in the mid-80s.  Not exactly old and loud boats boats from the 50's and 60's.

1986...

Why? Because if those from today time traveled back and kill off people in 1986 then many of them would not be, or would not be in the US military of 2016.

or

2016..

Why? Because many of those that where in, in 1986 are to old to fight todays youth.

Either way it is a stupid question. OP go check yourself into drug rehab so you stop asking stupid questions.

16er Bergdahl defects to 86 side.  86 side treats him poorly, trades him back to Obama in exchange for all sorts of technological goodies that level the playing field.  Obama parades him around the Rose garden, touts him as a hero, hugs his dad.  16ers become demoralized, and refuse to reenlist, all purchase DD-214 blankets on the way out.  86 wins by default due to attrition.  Truce is signed, hugs exchanged, roll down to the VFW together for a beer only to get treated like shit by the old timer WW2/Korea/Nam guys.  Tensions begin to rise, conflict threatens to breakout between the factions once again, but it's too late...the real enemy wins as the VA hospital system slowly kills them all.  A viscious insider sneak attack everybody should have seen coming.

1986 because their guys had worse gear, and it would also absorb mud which made it heavier.  Do you even LCE, Bro? Also, they had WW1 and Civil War veterans in their leadership, and everyone walked around in MOPP 6 because of the Red Menace.  Wolverines! The End.

How many dudes had done a combat deployment in 86 compared to how many have done them in 2016?
How many dudes shit on bags and showered with water bottles for months in 86?

How rough was it being stationed in Europe waiting on the USSR to invade.
