well its now 30yrs since Red Storm Rising was published, that got me thinking.....
If the U.S. military of 1986 had to fight today's U.S. military in a conventional fight which era would win? |

With modern JHP designs, 9mm is more capable than .45 ACP. The 1911 is a obsolete boutique gun.
Shotguns are a superior tool for home defense. I'm from the government, and I promise to not put the check in your mouth. '86 wins because of Reagan, Vuono/TRADOC, and sideburns. |

I'll play. I went on active duty in 1987. My son is on active duty now. They have better technology in many ways now, but the overall quality of the people on a whole, is lower ( his opinion ). I would call it a draw with a slight edge to the technology side. It would not be one sided for sure.

We lived a much more physical way of life 30 years ago.. and that translate to the battle field |

The 2016 military is more diverse. Liberals always tell us that diversity is a strength.
So 2016>1986 |

1986 because I ETS'd in October and wouldn't have time for this shit.

Considering the commander in chief that each respective military has in charge I'm going 1986!!!

1986 wins because of non-restrictive rules of engagement and a lack of reflective PT belts.

1986=Reagan2016=Obama Is this really a question. Lol Damn beat me to it! Reagan was a real bad ass..... I remember how he made them fuckers pay for blowing up our boys in Lebanon. .... wait...he didn't do shit about that. Big tech and experience advantage for 2016. Smoke 1986. |

The two sides meet on the battlefield, slow, shake hands, and conquer the entire world in a weekend.

'86.....didn't have to ask how a fight would affect the environment before engaging the enemy....and of course woodland BDU's and Reagan.

The guys in '86 were tougher because they had to carry heavier gear.

86 cause we ruled and had better rock music. Oh and because of the Gipper the F4 and Battle Ships .
Plus we had no millenials and their feels / safe spaces. |

Most of the .mil today has combat experience. I would think 1986 there would be very few soldiers with combat experience. Based off that I would say current mil.
Now saying that I have to say this. People were harder in the 80's and there wasn't any of the PC BS going on then that there is now. I went through in 99 and they claimed a 100% success rate on graduation (Army at Ft. Knox). NOBODY failed out of basic/OSUT/etc unless you were a complete turd. They would just pass them back to the next unit training. My cousin retired in the Marines this year. I think he has the same feeling that the core today isn't the same as the core when he went in. Either way I had the pleasure of dealing with them a bit in Afg, Pak, and Iraq. They are still some hard MF's. Overall I would still say Current mil but only by a small margin. Your SF troops are where the leg up is. |

I'm sure military advances in the Air Force alone in the past 30 years would play a huge factor.
Plus we're getting out maybe 15 years of wars now in the Middle East, I wouldn't second guess our guys now even thought it's an obungo administration. |

Smoke 1986. The people in the management ranks (commissioned and non-commissioned) of the military in 86 weren't exactly inexperienced; they were for the most part Korea, Vietnam and sometimes even WWII vets. General Vessey, the Chair of the Joint Chiefs until 86, was a 1st Sgt in WWII, Artillery in Korea, and Artillery in Vietnam. "In March 1967, when acting as Commander of the 2nd Battalion, 77th Artillery, he was given the mission of establishing a fire support base at Suoi Tre during Operation Junction City. Located deep in enemy-controlled territory, Vessey and his men oriented the firebase's defenses on the enemy's likely avenues of approach and rehearsed counterattack plans. During the attack by a reinforced regiment, the base was partially overrun. Vessey and his men fired their howitzers directly into the enemy ranks. Although greatly outnumbered, the defenders, aided by gunships and artillery, killed four hundred of their assailants while successfully defending the firebase. Lieutenant Colonel Vessey received the Distinguished Service Cross for his actions during the battle." |

super secret weapons of 2016 > 1986 stuff
1986 Leadership > 2016 leadership (remember 0 sacked a lot of generals and admirals) |

We would give each platoon back in 86 one computer without a CaC reader and tell them to change everyone's AKO password because they are out of date....Check Mate

86ers ambush the 16ers when they are in SHARP training. Over before it started.

How many female rangers did the 1986 Military have? ZERO...
Diversity is our greatest Strength. |

I'm gonna guess you could take the 2016 force, replace half of it with conscripts and still win by a large margin. If rules of engagement are the same for both sides.
The will of people is great and all, but humanity is really fucking good at designing better and easier ways to kill things, the progress never stops, the military has adopted lots of it in the last 15 years, and wasn't completely stagnant in the 15 before that. |

Reagan vs Obama? Yeah, ask else being equal, 2016 would win. To bad Obama abhors American winning anything. He'd pull the plug or sabotage the effort before the end.

Conventional: 2016 all day long, pretty much every piece of gear or vehicle is better. As far as troops, well you had fat guys floating around on ships and working in maintenance hangers back in 1986 too. Infantry and Spec Ops guys are still hard men today. Maybe even stronger due to work out routines/science and stuff like protein shakes and all the nutritional science gained in the last 30 years.
Yes today we have less, but our less can do a lot more than in the past. Stuff like GPS, JDAM's, Blue Force, MRAP's, PVS 14's, RCO's, Body Armor the list goes on and on Nuclear: 1986 |

Well pitting Reagan against Obongo.... I say Reagan takes the gloves off and kicks the shit out of obongo while the silver tongued devil is still talking to himself in a mirror.
