I have come to the realization that with the rise in popularity with Bern amoung the next generation, it is going to happen, one way or the next.
It may be not this election cycle, but will likely be the next because this house of cards known as the US economy is going to have the table shook after FBHO leaves office, and I doubt it will stand. With that being said, whomever is next in line is likely to take the fall, as FBHO intends. Can we recover from what has intentionally been done to us if Trump or Cruz take the helm? Im afraid it will just be a bandaid until the limb turns toxic. I hope we can recover, but the only chamce we have is if the Millennial's have a chance to grow up some before wanting another form of government. (And yes, for the sake of argument, I know we are not a true free market, but nor are we 100% socialist. The problem is the two can not coexist.) |
|
A "newer deal" has been inevitable for a while now.
The Dems have been maneuvering to be in a position to write it for decades. The GOP has been maneuvering to be in a position to let them. |
|
It will only happen if we let it happen.
You have two options, hunker in your basement ordering PMags over the interweb and complaining on Arfcom Or Get out there and DO SOMETHING about it! Be part of the solution and not the problem. |

As the economy continues to crumble I think you will see the US going back to its free market roots.
Problem is higher education has turned out some shitty, unthinking morons. |

Of that, I don't believe there can be any doubt. Once it starts, it doesn't end until it all falls apart.

I'm betting the next 25-50yrs will be more of a transitioning period with a number of different evolving philosophies being tried until something totally new takes hold.
I think Capitalism is on its way out, though. I also think communism is too. |
|
|
marx predicted this--that the inevitable workings-out of society would result in a transformation from capitalism to socialism (which, in his mind, was only a transitional stage on the way to the communist utopia).

It's probably too late for that though. |

America is socialist. We have a long way to go before we're as socialist as most of Europe. No doubt we are headed there but we're not that bad yet. Just because we aren't as bad doesn't mean we aren't already socialist. Top 5 characteristics of socialism: 1: Government ownership of productive resources (not quite there, but already pretty damn close in certain key areas) 2. planned economy (not quite there also, but already pretty damn close) 3. Redistribution of income (already there - refundable tax credits, etc) 4. Societal goals are social welfare instead of private profit (read the news for a little while and tell me we aren't already there) 5. Peaceful and democratic revolution (all this has happened through incrementalism and the voting booth) |

History is going to repeat itself again and again. I read recently that Rome got so bad it was illegal to quit your job if you had one (tax money has to come from somewhere I guess!). Anyone know if this is true?

What I mean is, the more jobs that are taken over by automated systems, combined with rising population, there will come a day when jobs will be either a luxury or a burden. Capitalism just won't be able to account for that. |

Lots of people say slavery undid the Republic, because there were just too many cultures mixed in. What bearing that has on today, I have no idea. |

“The America of my time line is a laboratory example of what can happen to democracies, what has eventually happened to all perfect democracies throughout all histories. A perfect democracy, a ‘warm body’ democracy in which every adult may vote and all votes count equally, has no internal feedback for self-correction. It depends solely on the wisdom and self-restraint of citizens… which is opposed by the folly and lack of self-restraint of other citizens. What is supposed to happen in a democracy is that each sovereign citizen will always vote in the public interest for the safety and welfare of all. But what does happen is that he votes his own self-interest as he sees it… which for the majority translates as ‘Bread and Circuses.’
‘Bread and Circuses’ is the cancer of democracy, the fatal disease for which there is no cure. Democracy often works beautifully at first. But once a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader—the barbarians enter Rome.” -Robert A. Heinlein |

The most telling thing in this country's political change is that more young people clamor for a move towards socialism. Sad to say, unless they change their views they represent the future of our country and the way it's heading.

Conservatism is naturally susceptible to a failure to adapt.
Progressives to recklessness. It's going to end badly. |

We went socialist in the 30s. The 60s saw a larger push. People like to blame the younger generations but they are building off of decades of groundwork laid by the last two.
|

The voting age needs to be raised. Republicans need to focus on making this happen if they ever get the opportunity to do so.

We've been a socialist country for some time. We merely quibble about the degree of socialism.
The worry is that a lot of people seem to be pushing the same kind of stupid socialism that has destroyed Argentina and Venezuela. |
