Do metal recyclers sell scrap? Last I checked, I was pretty sure they don't.
I have a brand new welder, and I need to practice on stuff. I'd prefer a door, fender or hood. |

I would go to some shops and ask around. The price of scrap steel is so low right now, I bet they would let you have some. Last time I took some tin to the yard, they were paying $35 a ton. That barely covers fuel for me.

Some landfills will let you scavenge, including scrap metal. Many of them now separate out salvageable beforehand, though. Guess it depends on the landfills in your AO.

Post an ad on craigslist and offer about 10-15 cents a pound for what you want. Hell, 8-10 cents would probably work thats still probably double the value of scrap in your area currently.

There is a local metal recycling place around here that sells scrap structural steel. I am going there on Saturday looking for some I beams for a car chassis table I am building.

Junkyards for me.
Some older cars are good for steel patchboxes. |

Last time I visited a metal recycling yard, they were happy to sell me whatever. I left there with quite a few chunks of aluminum, steel and brass pulled from scrap buckets from a machine shop.

Any large fab shops around you? Good question. I have no idea. I'm sure out in the country there are. This is what I was going to recommend. Find a welding shop or machine shop. Your best bet would probably be a place that builds trailers. A recycling place would gladly sell you a hood or fenders. They only pay $60 per ton for it to begin with. If a hood weighs 50lbs, they only paid $1.50 for it. |

Thrift stores sell old bed frames for as low as 10 bucks. If you get a really old/heavy one, you can use a chop saw & have a great source for cheap angle iron for projects.

A guy on another forum I used to frequent was scratch building a Datsun roadster, his main source of sheet metal was thrown out washers and dryers.

Just kidding, what kind of welder did you get? |

Just stand next to me with a trash bag when I whip out an AK. I make it rain steel.

I wish you were in Maryland, I have a bunch of shit I'd give you. Maybe I should learn to weld...

Where are you in Texas? Near Beaumont? I can give you those old fenders and doors...

Check the Craigslist Free section.
People give away scrap metal all the time around here. |

Stop on by.
You can root through our scrap bin and take what you need. |

Look for a steel supply company around you. (A local one here is KGS Steel as an example)
You want to ask for drops from orders they cut for customers. Usually small pieces and usually cheap. |
|
[#25]
Find a welding shop, they almost always have a dumpster full of scrap, just ask if you can buy some scrap for practice and how much they per pound or foot.

View Quote Some of the local towns have "clean-up days", where residents can set out items they don't want anymore at the curb and the street dept will come haul it off. You can find a lot of those old bed frames then too. I'm surprised at some of the stuff people throw out. I'm not too proud to say that I've never picked through any of it either! |

Hit up some paint and body shops. They have tons of crashed up fenders and doors that they have replaced just laying around that I would bet they would let go cheap (or give some to you)

I've purchased a lot of metal from scrap yards. The bigger operations frown upon it, but the smaller ones are typically more than happy.

i go to the scrap yard all the time, to look for parts and pieces i need sometimes. i think they charge me around $1.00 a pound. plus its fun to look at the cool stuff you can find.

A machine shop near me, I paid him for some scrap to practice on, after that I deposited my welded up pieces and he let me take fresh back out. Did that a few times, even got some tips after he looked at some of my welds.

Scrap is worthless right now. All steel scrscrap should be very cheap.

The local U-pull-It's around here have special deal weekends, where you can get a hood or fenders for $20 each. Regular price might be double that. As far as just getting some scrap sheet metal to practice welding with, just cut the sheet metal out of a car roof. We did that to get sheet metal for making patch panels on race cars. Nobody wants to buy roofs, so the yards usually charged $5 for as large a section as you could get. |

Dude, you're in TX. Go to any Hispanic neighborhood. In the cul-de-sac, dead end streets, or corners you can find all kinds of scrap car parts.

Get an early 90s ranger or s10. Extra points if the leaf spring mounts are broke. Drive around at night. I swear those trucks come with some magic scrap radar built in. I live out in the sticks and can set scrap by the road and it will be gone in a few hours every time.

It was a hard choice for me. I read a thousand opinions and got a thousand different responses. For me, it came down to price. The hobart was a bit cheaper. If the Lincoln was the same price I probably would have got that instead in all honesty. |

Check with body repair shops they may give you the sheet metal you are looking for.

Metal supply shops around here sell drops by the lb. I drop in a poke through the drops pile on occasion looking for small bits and pieces to mess with.
|
|
[#48]
I called a few scrappers, and every one of them said that they don't sell to individuals.
I called a steel supplier and they said they sell it by the lb at their drop location (I'm not sure what that means ) In short, the people who said "call metal supply people" win. |
