My company will match 6% of what I put in, is this good ? I've always opted out of 401k, but I think I'm going to start.

Dollar for dollar up to 6% isn't a bad match.

Well, do you know of another investment that immediately doubles the first 6% you put in?

6% is really generous, you should put in the full amount to get matched.

My company matches 100% of 6%. Yes, it's very generous and they didn't even pause it during the 2008 recession. Even new employees are vested immediately.

I looked at a job offer from another company and turned them down due to their 401K plan. They only matched 3% and would only deposit the match once a year. My company matches every paycheck.

Yes 6% is great. My employer did 6% dollar for dollar for 5 years. Lots of free $

Go for it.  I contribute 5% and my co. kicks in 10%.

yes you need to start, it's free money, old age will catch up with you quick, I'm 65 and it seems like yesterday I was a kid, save some in your 401k every month, you'll thank me for this advice in 40 years.

Mine doesn't match shit. But we do get an average of 15% profit sharing check that goes into our 401k. The lowest in 20 years it has been is 12%.

Get half

Rake in the 401k, SS (hopefully), etc

Don't ever marry again.

Oh, and usually the company matches 50% of the first 6%. A full 6% match is amazing.

To give you something to compare to. Part of my job is to sell investment properties to overseas investors in the Seattle market. Most people know that the real estate market in Seattle is a good investment opportunity right now. We sell our clients on 6% cap rate, and they are taking on some risk.

Put another way... 6% ROI with no work and no risk is a great investment.

6% is good.
That's what my company match is and it has helped my 401k bottom line tremendously.
And to max out your 401 you either have to live debt free and lean or make a lot of money.
I put 17% in of my own money and am not even close to maxing mine out.
Don't be an idiot.
Invest at least 6% of your money and their 6% will place 12% of what you make into the casino.

you would be a fool to not put in at least 6%
you would be smarter to try and max out the 401k
I have a coworker that has maxed out every year, and is projected to retire with over 1 million $$$$

50% more than I get.  Full 4% is decent for a non-profit company like mine.

Company contributes 15% into a retirement plan.  I contribute 10% into a separate 401k.  Also get a 10% bonus, 3% years of service bonus 200 dollar birthday bonus and a paid vacation on a couple occasions.. I like my company.

I get 10% for every 8% I put in, but I'm an 8+ year employee and definitely the exception to the rule.  6% is fantastic and better than my co-workers that started even 5 years ago get.

"No."

do it.

my company match is 100% up to 6%.  Last  year I wasn't able to put anything in as I had so many expenses (and given the state of the stock market last years contributions probably wouldn't have made a difference now), but I am doing so this year, and given how low the prices of the various funds that are available to me are, Im increasing my contributions this year to 12%, with company match thats 18% of my pre-tax going to investments that are low now but will eventually return.

6% is great.  My company for the longest time matched 50 cents on the dollar up to 3%.  Guess how many people signed up for the 401k?  in 2008 they changed it to dollar for dollar match up to 5% plus a 2% gift on top of that.  401k enrollment exploded.  In January, they increased the company match up to 6% while still gifting another 2%.

I'm putting in 9%, plus getting an 8% match/gift on top of that for a total 401k deposit of 17%.  In June, I'll bump it up to 10%.

Yep.

You put in 6%, and the company matches it. At the end of the year, barring any gains or losses, you'll have 12% of your pay saved up in your 401k.  6% is pretty generous.

It's something I've never been involved in so I asked, if it was hookers and cocaine I wouldn't have asked. But since this involves my money I wanted to hear some thoughts on the matter.

look at it this way, you could lose a lot of money each year and none of it would be your own thanks to the matching*.

Assuming 100% of the 6% which is indeed good.

again, free money.

Mine will match 1 to 1 up to 6%, then .5 to 1 up to 10%

I put in 10%, they give me 8%.

where's the downside?

6% of what you put in, or 6% of salary?  Big difference.  My company matches up to 6% of salary, with no vesting period.
