I don't see it used often, but I start by asking the other person to cite another nation whose constitution authorizes their military to be armed. Then I ask them to name a nation who doesn't have an armed military or an armed security force, followed by asking them to name another amendment in the bill of rights that grants the federal government additional power. Any further argument to say the militia is the "military" or that somehow this one enumerated right actually is there to grant a "right" to the government to restrict the military starts to sound pretty thin.

I tend to think that those who are not inherently evil and malicious just haven't thought that deeply about things and are just parroting things that sound good to them.

IDK

If you have to go into all of that chances are you're not going to change their mind no matter what you say.

Best to walk away.

Honestly, plenty of well intentioned people don't know that the second amendment is there for the reason it is. They figure that hey, I see no reason to own a 30 round semi auto rifle, and they are surrounded by Fudds who parrot all the drivel about how 'pure' the sport of hunting was way back before the newfangled automatics came out. They have to condemn semi autos to align with these old geezers, who are not bad guys either. But they moan, and talk crap,  complaining about things, claiming they 'never took more than one shot to put a deer down, can't imagine why these kids would need it'.

My dad was this way, until he came around a few years ago. It's very difficult to reach these people, and show them the truth. They have been indoctrinated their whole lives to believe that the second amendment is there for hunting.

A lot of people don't care about the mechanisms of government. You are wasting your time.

This is the mentality you're dealing with...

I just stick with the "Do you feel that everyone has the right to defend themselves?" argument.

I've had the best luck with it when it comes to changing opinions.

I just tell them that the second amendment exists so I can own guns to protect myself from them.  They act surprised and ask me what I mean.  I tell them that Marxists, Commies, and socialists are the most blood thirsty scum to ever slither across the face of the earth.  Surprise!  I don't have any leftist friends.

I have stopped arguing about it myself. Most folks already have their mind made up, and the chances are slim to none that they listen.

Libtard: Only the government should have guns!

Me: I totally agree!

Libtard: Wut!?!

Me: America is the only nation founded on the principle that the people are the government. Thats why the second amendment exists. So that politicians never forgot who's in charge...

Yea that seems to work.

Or the "If someone broke into your house and attacked you/your family would you hit them as hard as you could in the head with a baseball bat?" Yes? "That's a good chance of killing them" "Why not shoot them then?" ....Blank looks....

I think you are wasting your time.

There are fewer people sitting on the fence than you think.  Most of the disarmament crowd doesn't give a shit about anything but political power for themselves.

As for the rest - there comes a point where meaning well but parroting things no longer cuts it as an excuse.

If that's your simplest question, I would hate to see the most complicated one.

I usually just say, imagine someone is about to attack your child with a knife. Would you rather be holding a gun or a phone?

My answer to them is generally along these lines.

Listen.  Your gun control act from 1934 did work, so you tried again in 1968.  And again in 86, and 89, than 94, and here in California you continue to push in 2000, and again and again and again.  So what exactly is it you expect to accomplish?  Total ban and confiscation.  So knock off the bullshit, and just tell the truth.

"Mexico has some of the toughest gun control laws in the world - And yet has a  much higher gun homicide rate than the United States."

"So - If tough gun control laws really worked, why isn't Mexico a crime-free paradise?"

The expression "the people" is used 5 times in the Bill of Rights. In only one case does anyone question what it means.

The best one I've used so far is on a woman that was firmly against all guns. I asked if she had any kids, one teenage girl 14 years old. I asked what would she do if 3 big guys started to rape her daughter. She immediately snapped that she would kill every one of them. I asked how. And with a straight face, she said she would find a gun as quick as she could and kill all 3.

I had to ask "Wouldn't be better if you just had your own to defend with?" Again with a straight face, she said "Yes but I'm not a bad person so I wouldn't have one." Made it that simple for her and she still couldn't add one plus one and get two.

Proof again liberalism is a mental disorder.
