[Last Edit: Striker]
Just got off the phone with Doug. he has experienced some serious complications post surgery and ended up back in the hospital.
He is doing much better now but still has a long road ahead. The difference in the sound of his voice is unbelievable...I can hear his strength returning. A good friend of his created a fund raiser page to help with his expenses. As you know he saved the money to cover the surgery but the rest went in a nutshell to keep him alive. Here is the link to her page. she wrote a very touching story on the page. Doug would most likely not be here today if not for you folks...in the 20+ years I have been a member I have witnessed you do amazing things..and just when I think it can't get any better..you prove me wrong. I have never met Doug in person but through out this journey we have become very close and I can't wait to meet him when he gets home and I have you folks to thank for giving us the opportunity to do that. You will never know how much this means to Doug... https://www.youcaring.com/douglasbean-838885 <- fund raiser link! George June 3/17 Long time arfcom member M4-CQBR needs our help. He needs corrective surgery by a specialist. His story is on his fund raiser page set up by his family. He wrote me a very long e-mail explaining his situation. He is an extremely proud man and I can tell from his letter it was extremely difficult for him to ask for help. But his back is against the wall and he needs us. His daughter needs her dad. Here is the link to his fund raiser.. He doesn't know I posted this yet as he is bed ridden and it's extremely difficult for him to sit up. Lets surprise him and let him know we have his 6. https://www.giveforward.com/fundraiser/5sh8/join-doug-s-fight-for-his-life Update #3. Just got an e-mail from Doug. To say that he is extremely emotional over the generosity of LaRue Tactical and all you arfcommers would be an understatement. He has gone from a very dark place to seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. In the 20+ years I have been here I think..wow..it can't get any better than this..and you people step up and prove me wrong..yet again. It is extremely humbling to be part of this...thank you. Doug has some logistics to sort out in regards to a method to accept the donations..one of those being the Patriot Act in regards to large deposits in bank accounts. He is extremely overwhelmed so this may take a day or three. UPDATE #4. We will be posting the second raffle shortly..we just have to work out some logistics.. Another awesome donation by another Industry Partner. Update #5. Wow..I didn't think the scope mounts would go that fast... Arfcommers are second to none when it comes to helping our own... Between the LaRue rifle raffle, funds collected through the gofundme page and the fire sale price on the Geiselle scope mounts you folks have raised enough to cover Doug's surgery, flights to and from the hospital and 2 weeks of accommodations after his hospital stay. he will be in the hospital for approx 4 weeks but can't fly for 6 weeks so he has to stay in a hotel close to the hospital for 2 weeks before coming home. This is very invasive surgery and his recovery time is going to be lengthy. Update #6. I haven't been able to reach Doug for the last week or so. I reached out to his mom and he has been in the hospital. I won't go into details but it is an issue with his body reacting to the meds.. He has tried to sign himself out as he doesn't want to use any of the money you folks raised for this as he needs it for the surgery. So..if you folks can keep throwing some money at his gofund me page when you have a few dollars to spare that would be great. It will take some of the worry away for his mom. ***update #7*** I finally connected with Doug tonite. Just hung up the phone actually. He sounded a whole lot better then the last time I talked to him. His stay in the hospital was actually a blessing in disguise..as a procedure he had done greatly relieved some of the pain in his abdomen. He got 2 tests done that provided beyond a shadow of a doubt that the mess used to fix his hernia is in fact coming apart. Several Dr's have told him that wasn't possible. It was a huge weight off his shoulders because now he knows for sure what is wrong with him. He had a "road block" that he was uncertain how to deal with regarding post op recovery. He is looking at 2 weeks minimum in a hospital at a considerable fee. Depending on his recovery time this could easily eat up the remainder of his money and if he isn't recovered enough to travel (go home) and runs out of funds then he will be out on the street. I told him to book the surgery and we would cross that bridge if and when he gets to it... This man has been through hell..I wish you all could talk to him.. I'm trying my damnedest to not cry typing this.. He can not put in words what it means to him with what you folks have done for him. He was very concerned that he had to spend some of the money during his last stay in the hospital on tests, medication, etc. I told him if he hadn't done that...I wouldn't be talking to him on the phone..I would be reading an e-mail from his mother I didn't want to read. That took some worry away from him. You folks saved this mans life. I cannot express what it means to me personally to be part of this community. You folks are second to none. George **update #8** Talked to Doug for an hour or so last night. He ended up back in the hospital and had to have emergency surgery again due to a blockage in his small intestine. He is home now and doing good although he can't eat much. His surgeon that will perform the corrective surgery wants him to wait a month before the operation to give him time to heal. This really knocked the wind out of Doug's sails and he's pretty down. he doesn't have net access right now but knowing that you folks have his back is great comfort to him. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. **update #9** Doug sent me a text last night..he was life flighted to Florida for more emergency surgery about 15 minutes after he text me. His liver started failing, his kidneys, the edema he had came back. He really needs your prayers now more then ever. He is at one of the 3 New Health Hospitals which apparently have best gastroenterologist are. I will update you as soon as I hear from him. ***update #10** Received a text from Doug about a hour ago. he is still in Miami but as he put it.."I have finally turned the corner on this battle for my life and it's looking like I will be able to return home by the end of this week." I told him some of our florida members were asking which hospital he is in so they could stop by. I will let you know when I find out. ***update #11*** Just hung up the phone from talk to Doug. He told me that the surgery he had in Florida was extremely successful. he could tell it was by how his body reacted. He is feeling better although still limited mobility wise. He said if he doesn't suffer anymore set backs..he should be ready by the end of August for what will hopefully be the last operation he has due to this. I'll post a bit more but I have to check a couple of things first... Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers. PS..when he was in the hospital in Florida he got online with a fellow patients tablet and read through this thread. he has a very difficult time putting in to words what you folks mean to him.. **update #12*** Talked to Doug tonite. He received some fantastic news regarding a medication he has been trying to get prescribed. He is extremely knowledgeable in all of this as he was a paramedic and most of what he tells me he has to dumb down so I understand it... He should have the new medication in his hands tomorrow..or Thur. He is now at the point where he can start thinking about an actual date for the surgery.... If you folks can keep making donations however big or small that will be more help then you will ever know. He has the money set aside for the surgery but has had to use the remaining to keep himself alive in a nutshell. He is on some very expensive medications (which is is slowly getting off of after the success of his emergency surgery in Florida). I will be talking to him again tomorrow to find out if he actually has the prescription for the new med in hand and will let you folks know. **update # 13** Talked to Doug yesterday afternoon. He has been on the new pain med since the middle of Aug. He sounded really good and will be talking to the surgeon in about 2 hours from now. Hopefully this phone call will finish with him having a date for the operation. I can tell you we are going to need one more big push to get him where he needs to be. I will have more info later after I talk to Doug. |

Here is an article that was written about my story & medical situation in November of 2014 by a former FOX News Anchor/Journalist that I would like to share with everyone. She interviewed me, wrote & published the article nationally online in hopes that it would help advocate for me to my State's health care system, but to no avail. It also has some information in it that might save anyone else here or their family/friends from having this possibly happen to them- by not allowing a surgeon to put mesh into the human body. http://meshmedicaldevicenewsdesk.com/hernia-mesh-injured-doug-bean-suffering-in-silence-and-neglect I am so humbly grateful for this community. I'm not positive, but I think I remember seeing a commercial for a class action suit over mesh. Is it possible you could join that, or hire a lawyer for a malpractice suit, or get that surgeon to pay for this surgery? If you have a Dr that will do it for 10k, your first surgeon might consider that a bargain. Just a few thoughts.

A former SIL had to get a mesh job repaired in Houston after a bad experience.. anonymous donation made to the fundraising site. good luck, doug. |

Have you looked into Medicaid or an exchange plan? All politics aside you should be able to have insurance of some form or another cover the procedure.

Please please don't take this wrong but if you turned up at the ER in intense pain, wouldn't this be addressed?
I'm thinking of my brother-in-law, who has had 5 or 6 heart procedures done (mostly stents), and prostate surgery, and he has never had any insurance, medicare or medicaid. When he has an attack he is taken to the ER and they wheel him into surgery within an hour. He has no money to pay the bills, so I guess they just end up writing it off. I'm just sayin', and not from hearsay ... I've been to the hospital with him! As much pain as you're in, I'd call an ambulance and dare them to turn you away. Reference (from Wikipedia): Can a hospital refuse to treat a patient? Public and private hospitals alike are prohibited by law from denying a patient care in an emergency. The Emergency Medical and Treatment Labor Act (EMTLA) passed by Congress in 1986 explicitly forbids the denial of care to indigent or uninsured patients based on a lack of ability to pay. |

My heart sank reading your article.
I had the same hernia surgery in October and am experiencing worse pain now then before. I have a lot of the same issues with pain in the same areas. I got the same run around from the doctor. His reply is it is just everything getting used to its new home. I get severe pain out of no where like somebody is poking me as hard as they can with thier finger. It is really bizarre. I wake up in the middle of the night swinging thinking somebody is attacking me or something. Wished I never had it done. |
