1)   Initially looking for a quadcopter (6 or 8 rotor drone of some sort maybe) for a 9 y/o for Christmas.  What is a good bang for the buck drone?  And uuhh... durable also.
2)   Maybe later looking for something a little more advanced for the bigger kid what do you guys recommend?

That was a rich Russian.
I'm not Russian or rich.

What's your price point?

I looked at motor size, transmitter, and overall size, and found this to be the best bang for the buck.

WLtoys V959 2.4G 4CH RC Quadcopter Camera With Spare Part Bubble Blower V959-17 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BLWPTMK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_vADwwbWWR2VRH

Have had it for more than a year and still working fine after many crashes.

that's pretty cool. Nice and cheap, so even if you do break it you don't feel too bad.

If you want a tiny one for flying indoors, the cheerson cx10 is only around $15 and is a lot of fun. Be sure to order the rotor cage thing to protect it when you crash.

I'd like one to torture the cat with but all the tiny ones I've seen have a non-replaceable battery.  That's a deal-killer for me.  You would be lucky to get thirty cycles out of it before power starts to fade.

another vote for the hubsan x4 it ia pretty great.  if you want a tiny one with a removeable battery estes makes the proto x slt  with a removable battery.

I was looking at this one for my 10 year old.  Bigger and better outside.

Great deal on this unit. It is about the same as the P2VP  that was out last year and cost $1200 when it came out.
