lots of fun... careful though they can hurt you in unusual ways
my wife knocked mine off a shelf and it landed on her foot

she blamed the cannon like it was the cannons fault for taking out her foot

they are kind of a gateway drug... I catch myself looking at larger bore cannons and mortars and such

...and you will be the hero or villain of your neighborhood.  In my case, I am the hero.  Your mileage may vary.

I own, loaded, and shot all of these numerous times.  They are so much more safe with FFG black powder than traditional fireworks, and so much more fun, it is ridiculous.

I don't even bother with traditional fireworks anymore.

All you need is FFG, a wooden dowel, paper towel for the .30 caliber, and newspaper for the bigger calibers.  And of course the proper wicks.

When the Grand Daddy goes off with 1/2-3/4 cup of FFG black powder, loaded correctly, it feels like you are getting slapped in the face at 30 yards away.  Sometimes you get a really cool smoke ring.

Have fun.  These things are as safe, and as obnoxious as you want them to be.

I bought one today because of this thread.

Considering neither the wife nor I spent a penny otherwise on black Friday my conscious is clear.

I made some, i'll post pictures tomorrow if I remember. All 4 were bored to .51" best I recall. And fire .50 lead ball, or well anything else you care to shove in them. Their barrels are thick as hell, I made them from some Ditch Witch chrome molly hydrolic pistons. I don't think 3 of the 4 could be blown up short of threading the muzzle and screwing a bolt in em. The 4th most decortive one I had someone help me on a lathe and turned out something really pretty, so it's a little more narrow, still I think you would have to try REAL hard to blow one up. I sold them as "signal cannon only!" And made each buyer sign something I typed up absolving me of any liability.

As for how I like them. Love'em. At get togeathers sometimes I brought one with, loaded it up with about 2x what you would in a muzzle loader and stuff a lot of wadding in it, used what else.. cannon fuse to light it off. Makes a real nice BOOM! that would echo across my friends lake. When firing .50cal lead balls, it would go flipping end over end though if you didn't stake it down real well.

I have a few.  I have 2 of these .30cal pocket cannons:

And I have this golf ball mortar.  Uses a .22 blank to set it off.

I haven't fired either one yet.  I don't have fuses for the small ones...tried to order some but the website won't let me.  I need to call it in.
And I don't have powder for the golf ball mortar.  No one within 100 miles of me sells black powder, and the minimum order online is 5lbs ($$$), which I don't have to spare at the moment...

OK, I just ordered fuses.  I was finally able to here on the work computer from a different web site.  As soon as they come in, I'm gonna test it out!

Yes its functional. It fires and recoils like the original though there is no pneumatic dampeners on it just simple springs. Unfortunately you have to make them yourself. the plans were published in a series of  magazines in 1944. I was able to find a set on ebay a long time ago. The design is a scaled down 6" quick firing naval gun used by the British and several other countries that bought them from Britain in the early 1900s. I actually also found the original manual the British used to teach officers about the gun and it came with full color drawings of the entire gun.

I have been working on my own design utilizing a sliding breach instead of interrupted thread style of breach. Unfortunately I'm an engineer and not a machinist so i have not gotten around to having my plans turned into a prototype. The main issue with selling them eventually would be the cost since there is a lot of parts involved and the cost would be $3K. BTW my design is going to use the 32 H&R mag casing with 147 gr 30 caliber bullet so I can used pulled down tracer projectiles to shoot out of the cannon.

Here is an early design attempt I made on the sliding breach block.

Love the ship battle, I could use up a few days doing that.

I'd like something that could shoot .22 pellets, steel BBs or airsoft BBs.

I have one of the Traditions Naval cannons in 50 cal. Will shoot well past 200 yards. Those little ones for $39, well I think I'll buy one!
