For hunting purposes only? .308 Winchester.
I mean, why when there's .30-06? |

I don't "dislike" any calibers. There are several I wouldn't buy unless I had a really specific utility for them, but "dislike" is not possible.

.243, .270, and any short mag. Wtf is the point. I've always liked 243 with a 95 grain bullet. In it's day it was a great western plains deer/speed goat/coyote cartridge all rolled into one. It still is one. Plus, six millimeter accuracy is best accuracy. |

View Quote I prefer 243 to 308 for hunting. 308 really is overkill on medium game like white tail unless you plan to shoot them from beyond 300-400 yards. 243 produces less recoil, is more pleasant to practice with, and a has a reputation for good accuracy. Last deer I shot was with a 243 from 207 yards, verified by range finder. DRT, double lung shot. It works. |

7mm mag. Every goober around here comes equipped with one that he shoots infrequently and poorly when he does. I'm sure out west where the shots are longer someone who was dedicated to the craft of shooting could make use of one. I've killed more deer with .35 Remington and 30-06 than anything else. View Quote Used to have one. Accurate and highly effective. I also had to go the chiropractor every time I lit one off, so I traded it |

If I was a hunter, I wouldn't want anything I couldn't find at a semi-local sporting goods store. No exotics.

They chase obscure shit looking for the nth degree of advantage in camo, rifles, ammo, scent, bait, ad nauseum....then drive their F-150 to public hunting land on opening day. |

Any of the mags are a waste/overkill! An attempt to make up for poor shot placement!

View Quote Some people like myself that owns both calibers don't care for the extra recoil of the 06 and prefer a short action to a long action in hunting bolt rifles. And last, a .308 does very well in a short barrel length right down to 16 inches. Not so much the 06. |

270, 7RM and 338WM in particular, all bottlenecked belted magnums except the 375.

Anything in "magnum", never had a need for one that a standard cartridge couldn't accomplish.

7mm08. Pointless. If you want a higher bc bullet, shoot a 260. Otherwise a 308 is what you want. And the recoil argument/reason always presented is retarded as well . 140gr 7mm-08 recoils every bit the same as a 150gr 308 and a 140gr 260 How could it not? The difference in bullet size is so minuscule that with the same amount of powder it doesn't make sense that 7mm-08 would have less felt recoil. |

7-30 waters. Finding ammo is a nightmare. Back around 1994 i passed up on a brand new Winchester Trapper Carbine in 7-30 Waters and I have been kicking myself ever since. Sitting next to it was the same model in 44mag, I did get that, and it is still in the box. |

Never could get into 338 Win Mag. Never could get into 338. Lot's of recoil, for most situations doesn't outpace 30-06 or 300 win mag, for the heavier bullets 375 H&H does a far better job with pretty much the same recoil. Throw the .35 Whelen into the mix and the 338's utility becomes even less. I know a lot of people swear by 338 win mag for Grizzly and Moose. View Quote .243 |

.30/40. God what a worthless round. Especially in that equally worthless, weak-assed action of a Krag.

I wouldn't use the word dislike, but there are plenty of cartridges I don't have any overwhelming desire to own. I have noticed that I no longer own any heavy kickers...well, except for my 45-70 and I shoot cowboy level loads in it. I find I like having my retinas right where they are, it's ever so much more convenient that way. |

Quoted: .30-30. If its a lever gun, I'll take a .44 Mag or .450 Marlin. Otherwise I'll go with a full power cartridge. If its for youth, just load it light. View Quote |

why all the hate for 308 when you can load it from 110gr to 240gr? i just bought a Rem 700 Mountain 308 today so please validate my purchase and tell me its limits lol. im a new hunter but figure ill be hunting deer and boar and shoot a lot of 308 already with other rifles so it made sense.

Dislike cartridges? When I only had a pellet gun I would've traded most anything for ANY cartridge! That being said, unless given to me I would not buy a 16 or 28 ga shotgun, 25 ACP, 32 ACP, or 30-30. There are probably more but those are the ones I can think of right now.

View Quote A more reasonable maximum is 180gr. 308 is usable for a lot of things. But it's not ideal for anything. Same with 30-06. |
