I hate california and work remotely so I can live anywhere and im looking at reno. Been there many times for my kids baseball tournaments and various trips to tahoe. Sparks seems decent. Where should I look? What are rents like? Thanks in advance. I posted in NV hometown forum but not getting much action. |

Reno? Hell no!
95% of it is a piece of junk dump. What part of Ca are you in that makes Reno look good? |
|
Go live in Tahoe?
Dafuq? There is still Nevada parts of Tahoe. |
|
Come to FL. At least we have crazy stories and people here.
ETA: No bringing CA politics with you. |

You can work remotely anywhere and you choose Reno? View Quote I should have clarified I have people I need to train in person often that live in northern california so being in reno would be close enough to do that. Plus my wife is close to her family in northern california. Reno is only a three hour drive. I would prefer utah or arizona but reno would be a good compromise. |
|
OP, enjoy the tweakers.......I mean locals.
Don't know what part of CA you come from but you may be in for a world of disappointment in your choice of Reno! And it is very clear I am a CA resident too! |

Reno does have that super awesome police force that is always on TV.

Ok so far reno doesnt sound great lmao. Any other ideas? Im trying to keep wife happy and keep travel costs down. I could fly back once or twice a month I guess.

Do you ever have to travel in the winter? Do you have much experience with Donner? Chico, Yuba City, Corning, Redding, Colusa, Gridley, Grass Valley, and a ton of other small cities or towns over Reno. Hell, go into Oregon. |

Good Lord.
Where and when did some of you visit? That said, Northern Nevada as a whole is a wonderful place to live (outside of downtown Reno is a different world). I would suggest taking a hard look at Sparks (east of Sparks Blvd) over Reno unless your housing budget allows the nicer ($1m+) Reno neighborhoods. |

I never noticed it to be as bad as everybody is making it out to be. I like it here, there's definitely some bad parts of town like anywhere else but if you don't live in those parts it's not an issue. |

Living on the water in Citrus County makes up for the lack of mountains, though I miss them. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citrus_County,_Florida |

The division of my company is headquartered in Minden. It's beautiful up(down?) that way. Of course you have to fly into that shithole Reno and then drive through that dying town Carson City but Minden is nice...And close to Tahoe.

I live in Hidden Valley in Lake County right now. It is ok. I'm just sick of CA. Oregon is also a possibility. Loved Medford/Ashland, but it is expensive there as well.
I have done winter travel. I have a 2015 4runner so I'm not real concerned about Donner. I've gone over it in the winter many many times back in my snowboard days. I have stayed in Sparks and Carson City for baseball tournaments. I haven't really been to any residential areas anywhere up there. That's why I'm asking here. I would like to live in a more free state and the no income tax thing is a nice draw along with the better gun laws and cheaper housing. I'd like to have my wife not have to work anymore looking for a place that is overall cheaper to live. |

Reno is not a step up from Lake County. Is just further east.

I don't understand the Reno hate?
The best part of Nevada is all of the BLM land that can't be marked no trespassing. I like to shoot and ride dual-sport motorcycles. I go to other states and everything is marked "NO TRESPASSING". Who wants to just look and other people's private land? Look at Galena on the south end of town. You have trees, skiing is 15 minutes away, and Tahoe is 30 mins. What's not to like? |

Carson City > Reno. Besides, they got that neat NV State Museum and the Nevada State RR Museum in Carson City. Free public range just up the hill too.

Hawthorne is nice this time of year. View Quote Without a doubt the worst coffee I've ever had in my life was at the casino in Hawthorn. Cute waitress looked like she was ready to leave town with whoever was willing to take her. The pawn shop was the best coffee. The Mexican food joint was ok. Funny the gunsmith was also the optometrist. The only grass in the town was at the State trouper office. You could walk around the entire town in 20 min. I did like the museum. Cool old pics and demilled bombs. I wonder if anything is in all of those bunkers out there. |

I had a cousin that lived in Hawthorne, and he had two half brothers that lived there. One of them had a more or less museum in his house, all stuff found in the desert, and some of it was amazing. One was a fancy engraved and plated pepperbox, and he had all the parts of a Hawken rifle found where it was dropped. Several cars, too. My cousin's shop was on a dirt street either one block or two blocks north of the highway, not far from the casino. The casino had it's own special character! |

I did not know at the time I was there that it existed. I got lucky to be out of some dumping rain when I was traveling on my MC, leaving Death Valley and going that way from Tonopah. I found the only room available that day to dry off, and get a bite to eat! |

Don't listen to the hate, Reno isn't so bad, especially if you can afford to live in one of the nicer areas. It's like any other small city, avoid the shifty areas and you'll be fine.
