It's being "accelerated" because they can use the tragedy to ram through legislation without public consideration in the wake of the attacks. If it were proposed in more sober times it would be opposed by a number of governments (Finland's is mentioned in particular).
This sounds like a familiar pattern. So the process goes -Admit large numbers of refugees from a known conflict zone with no security checks of any kind -Make little to no effort to capture known terrorists that you know are inside your borders out of a fear of "offending sensibilities" -These terrorists then perpetrate terrorist acts on your largely defenseless population -Blame the inanimate objects that they used in their attacks despite their not being legal anyway -Push through legislation to further restrict law-abiding citizens who had nothing to do with the tragedy -Refuse to change your policy of bringing in large numbers of refugees from a known conflict zone with no security checks of any kind -Rinse, lather, repeat Great recipe for fascism. This is what happens when ideology trumps any kind of sense. |

The EU proposals are just guidelines. It would take national legislation, in each country, to implement them. There will be pushback from some countries, such as Finland.
The practical effect would be nil, regarding terrorism. It would only burden law-abiding citizens, in the few countries that allow semiautomatic rfles now. In Greece, semiautomatic rifles -- indeed, all rifled long arms, including bolt actions -- are already illegal. Yet the country is awash with AK-47's, with the police estimating that 250,000 are in circulation. (They came in mostly from Albania, when the communist Hoxha regime fell.) The authorities want to be seen as doing something. They are whistling past the graveyard. |

When I was in the Balkans about 10 years ago, there were enough AKs and every other kind of Combloc weapon around that there's no way they could have got rid of them in 10 years, so I'm guessing there's still shit-tonnes of hardware withing a day's drive wherever you are in the EU.

Try getting a permit for "Category D" firearms in Australia. You really can't. Technically you can own a semi-auto center-fire with a permit. In reality almost no one does and they're so highly restricted that there is an effective ban on them. |
