I have been invited to go deer hunting with a buddy (I was not planning on going this year)...

My recce has been sitting glassless for a lil while now. Life just keeps getting in the way to replace the NF I had on it.

Basically I need something "quick n dirty"

What I need is a decent variable powered scope, in the $300 or under category.

Most available shots would be well within 150-200 yards (more like 50-75 yds)... But theres a good chance for a 200-400 yard opportunity along a woodline across a cornfield.

I could just buy a vortex or burris magnifier, and mount that behind a exps3 borrowed from my Block 1.5... But I think I'll feel better with an actual scope.

I've got a 30mm LT-104 sitting idle on the rifle... So I'd prefer a 30mm scope, but I guess I can order inserts to mount a 1 inch scope.

The only scopes I have in mind right now are both Primary Arms... The 1-6x or the 4-14x.

I would suggest a Leupold Vari-X 2.

Should be right under $300.

A Vortex Viper of the non-illuminated flavors start about $399.

The 30mm requirement kind of hurts your $300 budget.

I think Nikon is real tough to beat for the money. I just went to their website, and they've got the P series from their AR models in 3-9x with the BDC 600 reticle on sale for $159. The Nikon Spot-On ballistic app is really good too.

I can tell you from personal experience that the M series 3-12x AR model can take at least two drops onto concrete without breaking.

Leupold Rifleman 3-9x40

Or if you want a bit better upgrade from that, a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 or 50

Buy a set of Leupold rings or whatever for another $20 or so.

Or Nikon Prostaff scopes.

If you can squeeze $100 more out, you can get this bargain at Natchez:

http://www.natchezss.com/2-10x36-tactical-precision-scope.html

The Weaver 2-10x36 was originally close to $1000, but now they're on the clearance rack for $399.

First Focal Plane, Japanese glass, mil/mil turrets and reticle, etched reticle, 30mm tube, locking 5mil turrets - push down to lock and pull up to adjust.  Bright illumination.  I really like mine.  I really think it's worth the extra over the Midway exclusive 3-10x.

Just a heads up, while Natchez has it listed as the EMDR, it comes with a standard mil dot reticle.  Still a great deal.

Just walk into your local Walmart that has a sporting center and pickup a Leupold Rifleman in 4-12x40 for less than $300. Has the "gold ring" so it's lifetime warranty.

Weaver, Nikon, Sightron all good stuff. I've used them all.

Never picked up a Leupold VX2, I've been told the VX1 were crappy. I shoot a VX3, but that's a $500 scope.

The Weaver 1x3 is a heck of a good little AR scope. Not what I'd want to use on a 400 yard deer shot though.

Weaver has 2-10x38mm scopes in their V series that are nice hunting scopes. I really like being able to set it on 2 power in the woods, in really thick brush it makes it quick to pick up a deer. I'd like one of their model 800368 Weaver Tactical Rifle Scope 30mm Tube 2-10x 36mm but it is a little out of my price range.

are you looking at the first focal plane 4-14x on primary?  i have the BSA equivalent on my 6.8 rifle and its a pretty good scope.  it is a little heavy and doesn't fit in the burris P.E.P.R. mount though, i ended up ordering one off amazon that was very similar to the one primary sells but was a little cheaper.  This one:  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003NZ9W9E?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00

edit:  midway has the BSA with free shipping right now also.

Weaver classic extreme from Natchez. Best glass under $300, some are under $250, the 1.5-4.5 is atleast. Way better glass than the primary Arms. At these distances you don't need bdc or to dial in any corrections so the 1.5-4.5 should be fine. It has a huge eyebox even at 4.5x.

People will make fun but the UTG CQB and SWAT are great cheap scopes. I've had one on a rifle now for almost two years, rifle has been dropped and banged around during moves, never re-zeroed and still shooting like a champ.

Just amazon UTG CQB or UTG SWAT or LEAPERS and you will see the reviews. Also they come with everything you need to mount.

Only rational choice? Really?

Why not a Leupold VX-1 or VX-2 in 3-9x40? Either of those seems pretty rational.
