CZ P-07.

It can be setup either DA/SA with a decocker or cocked and locked with a safety (both with parts it comes with).

H&K P30? Honestly I was a huge fan of DA/SA with a decocker but I'm over it, I only own Glocks now, and my honest suggestion to anyone is the G19.

Why are you more concerned about the action type than the size, weight and ammunition capacity?

if he wants a compac or sub compact then the weight & capacity are pretty standardaction type is much more of a variance.

Sigs and CZs are nice. Beretta is worth a look as well.

I have a Browning Hi-Power I like a lot when I can comfortably wear enough clothing to conceal it on my hip cocked and locked.

This.

I would suggest a G19, but you obviously don't want one.  The p229 is going to cost you a few rounds, be heavier, thicker, higher bore axis but feel better in the hand.

I have both.  I shoot the Glock better & faster.  The Glock tends to push more straight back while the sig tends to want to flip a bit more.  The nice thing about the Sig is that many of the mags in the other p22x line fit the p229.  So your reload can be of a higher capacity mag.  Other than the higher bore axis, I really like the p229.  I'm keeping mine, especially since it's an older model (2009) before they changed things....and it's going to be a bit more difficult to replace.

With the P229, make sure you get the right mags, especially if you get an older gun with the narrower magwell.  The new ones have a flared mag & magwell, and take the older style mags.  The old ones do not, and only accept mags for the older guns.  Can be a bit confusing (new p229 is the p229-1, old is just p229.  P229r has a rail, no r = no rail).

H&K P2000.  G19 in size.  DA/SA. Decocker on the rear keeps it slim.  Grip is lovehandle friendly for IWB.  Soft shooting. Prices are lower than you'd think.  Goes bang every time. -J

This. Polymer so easier for carry, still awesome trigger. Great looks, low CZ bore axis compared to Sigs if you care about that kind of stuff. Can take PO9 full size mags for reload. Also very very affordable, great deals out there. I want bad. Cajun Gunworks for parts if you want to upgrade over time if it tickles your fancy.

I'm bent because people shit on appendix with a proper holster, yet people do stuff like Mexican. I'd Mexican with an empty pipe, but I'd never carry without an empty pipe so thats out.

Some good suggestions here...

I will be making a couple shopping trips to the local fun store here over the next couple of weeks to see if any of these strike my fancy.

Of course I will immediately lose anything I buy in a boating accident!

HK P30S.  Safety for cock ed and locked, safety off for DA/SA, decocker.  I own one, it's my carry piece.  Wanted a polymer gun that wasn't a glock that was a natural progression away from a 1911 in 9mm.  My only gripe about the P30 is the long trigger reset which can be adjusted with a trigger job from gray guns etc.  It's more accurate than any glock or mp I shot and right out of the box I was shooting it almost as good as my 1911s
